I was advised to tag all my questions and answers by another Mylotter who was more experienced than me. If you are asking a question, it will make it more likely to get greater responses. The tags help organize the subject matter so when people are searching topics of interest, yours will pop up if you have tagged your posts accordingly. Primarily it means the myLot can plant more relevent adverts on and around you discussion thus giving more to myLot and the more money they get, the more we earn. And secondly if someone wished to search discussions for a particular keyword then it is more likely to be shown.
