Define Forum?

What is the meaning of forum?What i have learned in my school days forum suppose to mean a place where different people of different categories participate with a common goal of exchanging their views reviews about certain things and perceptions and get into healthy debate via open discussions.
Do we have this kind of forum around other than mylot?
Well i have become member of five other forums and programs like orkut aswell but havent seen anything like this in any forum other than mylot.
What is your definition of forum and do you think there are other similar forums available like mylot?

a forum is a public meting place for open discussion of various topics, online a forum may also referred to as a bulletin board or discussion area.
i think the main objective of a forum is to provide an area where users can interact with question ,answers and discussion on a given topic.
