How do I prepare my soil to plant grass?

My back yard is basically clay, and weed. I have Bermuda grass in the front, and its just beautiful. I want to plant some grass in the back this spring. I have some pine trees so the back yard is partially sunshine. I did a little research, and it appears as if Fescue is the best choice. How do I prepare the soil? Do I put down a weed killer, and later plant the seeds? Is it better to get some top soil, or rent a tiller and add some soil conditioner to the clay?

It may be quite different in your climate than in the UK, but generally you should add manure and possibly sand to your soil to break up the clay. You just need to dig it in really well and rake the soild until it is loose, flat and crumbly. Spread the seeds according to the suppliers instructions and keep them watered, but not too much!
