The power of a good stylist.

I used to get my hair done all the time. My stylist retired when his back went out and he had to have surgery. Since then I've been letting my mom highlight, and getting it cut at the mall for $11. I thought... no big deal. It's just hair. And it goes a long time without cut or highlights because I'm so busy. I had about 6 inches of roots (I know - tacky). Today my mom treated me to getting my hair cut and colored and highlighted at her stylist. It cost more than I would ever spend on hair... but she did an amazing job. I feel like a million dollars. I feel feminine and confident... and like dressing up and wearing make up for once. Does anyone else know what I mean?

Oh boy do I know how you feel - just! LOL it's been a very long time since i've been to the hairdressers as I can't afford to get it cut every couple of months. So i've started doing it myself - badly! All was fine until a few weeks ago when I went a bit too far with the clippers and oops, ended up with a bald patch. So I thought what the heck, let's shave it all off and start again. It was very liberating having no hair to worry about, but it's growing back now and I don't thing i'll be doing that again! LOL

Oh don't ever do it! It's amazing what the shape of one's head looks like without hair! I've been wearing this weird hat for weeks now and I do so wish my hair would grow quicker. I'm glad the weather is getting colder here now, as it's not too uncomfortable to wear "the hat". I do get some funny looks, but what the heck! LOL

I know and understand what you mean so much..... around my house we have given the phenomenon a name. My husband will say sometimes, "It's fresh cut time isn't it?", meaning, you just need a litte 'pick me up' to feel better about yourself don't you? It is the perfect thing to put a little bounce back in my step. In my case, I have really thick, super curly hair with a mind of it's own, so it is important to find a stylist that knows and understands my hair. I have only started coloring my hair in the last year. I don't know why I waited so long on that one. I am now of the opinion that all people with curly hair should get highlights. Itadds so much depth and dimension. Glad you are feeling feminine and confident again. Have you dressed up and worn make up?

I know what you mean..I don't get my hair cut however I do get my hair braided alot. It just something about getting a new do that makes you look and feel great...Also I do my own hair when I don't feel like shelling out the bucks to get my hair braided...it is exspensive...when i get my hair braided it can cost anywhaer from 50-180 depending on style...thank goodness i know how to braid or i would be bankrupt just from keeping my hair look good :)...

I used to just go to the barber shop and spend 10 dollars, but back when I had hair, I should have put more money and effort into it. I would also go 2-3 months at a time without getting it cut, so it got pretty out of whack. Nowadays, I decided to just shave my head, because it's cheaper, lower maintenance, cooler (and the summers are getting hotter here), and I just plain look good with a shaved head.

Yeah from your picture - you do look good with a shaved head. Not all guys do. And having just been to California, I understand.

I absolutely know what you mean. I love getting my hair cut and colored professionally, and it always comes out 10 times better than when I color it myself. I haven't had a chance to have my hair done since December, and it's getting very lank, and the roots are beginning to show. Or should I say, have been showing for about 2 months.

It's probably been a year since I had a hair cut and 6 months since I got highlights. I was looking pretty frumpy.

A good stylist is a wonderful thing to find, but I haven't found one in years. I gave up after about the fifth time a stylist butchered my hair. Now I cut and color myself, and I'm very happy with it. While I -do- miss the experience of being pampered and all, I sure don't miss the frustration of having my long hair cut too short, or some twit putting layers in where they don't belong, etc. Maybe someday I'll venture into a salon again, though it might take a few more years before I'm willing.

I know what you mean. I quit for a long time after my original stylist retired. I could go to him and say "David I hate my hair ... do something... anything" and he would always know just how to cut it and what colors would look good. The new girl is better than he was... she is really talanted with color, highlights and blending. My mom had something with a lot of colors and it looks amazing.

Oh, I totally know what you mean. I haven't had my hair actually 'done' in quite a while, but I definitely remember how it felt to have such confidence in my appearance.

I know exactly what you mean. I haven't had my hair done in forever lol. The last time I had it done my partner treated me. I had a new style cut, and I had it colored with three different colors. It cost just short of $200 (I have LONG hair) but it was worth every cent. I felt just for once like I was a million dollars. It felt great!

Well hairs add a appeal to an individual personality ....and the proper hair style really make a person look apart from the crowd. Many people with good face but with bad hairs look very odd... I always choose a nice saloon and the best hairstylist in that saloon to have a haircut.

There is no feeling in the world as the feeling of a great hair cut and color. I am one to go to the mall and get my hair cut also and I color it myself. Every once and a while I splurge and pay the big bucks for a cut. I still haven't splurged for the color at a salon. When I get a real hair cut, I feel more confident. it is a great feeling.

You really don't know how bad your hair has looked until you have a good hair stylist cut, color and style your hair. I do it every six weeks or so and it's worth the money. When my kids were small I had little time or money and often cut my own hair. When I look back on photos of myself, my hair looked so awful. Now it's styled nicely and the color is so natural looking. I'm happy to hear that you were treated to a special day at the salon.

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I have a strange obsession with my hair. I always want it to look nice, not dry or frizzy. I spend way too much on products and to get it cut and colored. I always feel so great when I get it done. I don't think that there's anything wrong with it either. I feel like anything that makes you feel better about yourself is worth it. So, Withoutwings...treat yourself every now and then.

Well, personally, I do not get my Hair cut or Colored, etc. due to Relious beliefs, but I know how important looks can be. There have been times I have had people fix my hair over the yrs. and the days it looks really nice, it helps with my attitude towards myself.

Having a good haircut and color means the world and I know exactly what you mean and how you feel. I've been letting my hair go and not coloring and a lot of the gray has been popping up. My husband took me to go and get a haircut and color and highlights and I feel like a differant woman! I love how I feel and look now.

Thats funny because I did exactly the same thing yesterday. My roots were horrible and I cannot believe how much white hair I have now. As my hair is curly I have always cut it myself into a shortish bob, as I can get away with it being messy. Also I dye my own hair so I am very cheap on the hairstyling front. I must admit though, I felt so much better after doing it and I looked alot better as well.

I definitely do. I grew up with the same stylist until she had to stop working due to cancer :( So then for awhile I went to this little local shop which was cheap, but they also just did a very cheap/simple cut. For my sister's wedding, we went to a new place to get our hair styled, so now I go to them for haircuts. They charge about 40$ b/c they cut, blow dry and style. That's a lot and it doesn't even include tip!! But since they do such a good job, make my hair feel so good, and give me good grooming tips, I keep going. I don't go as often as some. When I'm leaving they are always asking "do you want to schedule your next appointment" which I never do b/c my next won't be for anohter 6 months or more :) Anyway, I've learned it's better to get your hair done well and pay the price b/c you end up learning in the process. I learned how to better style my hair and what products to use. I never learned that from the cheap hairdresser.
