All of the American Idol hoopla

United States

First, let me say that I use to be a fan of this show. It was one hour of semi-escape during part of my husband's long deployments. This year, it has not been so important to me, I don't hang up the phone because I want to watch it. But, with all of the hoopla and the hole sad thing making national news, I decided to weigh in on this subject. I am thoroughly disgusted with the whole process this year. The website, Vote for the Worst, is campaigning to have the worse singer make it to the end and seemingly, they are succeeding. Case in point, the singers who have been voted off, even though not the best, were so much better than one certain contestant who proves to me with each song I hear him sing that he is lacking talent and I have to wonder why he is on the show in the first place. Now, the question of voting for the worst. How fair is it that some deserving people may be losing out so that a point can be proven? Think about it, you apply for a job, you are the best qualified for this job, but because someone doesn't like the hiring process or possibly one of the people making the decisions, they decide to rally others to get the least qualified hired. Would you be angry? I know I would. I would be livid if that was the only reason I was told no. On the other end, I would not want the job based on this kind of criteria. It is an insult to everyone. I feel for those with the talent and chance to go the long haul that have to leave because of this pettiness. It is a shame. To me it is no better than stuffing a ballot box.

First of all, after last night's show I was sure we would have a girl winning this season. I thought the guys would be picked off one by one. Apparently I was wrong. I do not like any of these reality shows voting process when it comes to the public. It is a popularity contest plain and simple. Take Taylor Hicks for example. He really wasn't the best singer there. And letting viewers have 100 votes each isn't reality voting. They brag about the number of votes they got. But the vote count is not realistic because each individual is allowed to vote 100 times. Why? I think this season with this Vote for the Worst campaign will be the downfall of American Idol. They will have no choice but to end the series. Dancing with the Stars is another example of popularity voting. You are allowed to vote the number of times equivalent to the number of contestants. So what does that mean? You get to vote for each star? Let the experts do the judging.

I agree, and some have auto dialers just constantly calling, and if I even try to vote, I can't get through. The girl voted off tonight is not the best, but she is head and shoulders above many of the others. I will be surprised to see it back for another season. I will say this, Taylor Hicks was one of my favorites. I really enjoyed his performances, largely because of his charisma.

I thought for sure a female was going to win as well this season and still feel that way but with Sanjaya still there it makes me wonder. I definitely agree that Taylor should not have won last year either. I thought Chris Daughtry was better than him and is currently doing better than him. The voting process is horrible and if this show wants to continue they will need to change it. The judges should decide on who leaves, not the fans. This is a singing competition, not a popularity contest or best looking contest.

I adored Chris, that guy has more talent in his little finger than a million sanjayas! I am hoping for Melinda, she is very talented!

Well, this yr. has been quite interesting. Between Antonella Barba, Sanjaya, Haley and Phil, it makes me wonder what could happen next. There definately is not the Talent like last yr, and for Gina to leave before Phil and Haley is unreal. What is America looking for this yr? Or are they trying to keep it as an Idol to remember in the bad sense of things?

I think that some of the votes are from young girls voting with hormones and the others come from an unfair campaign

You are definitely right about the voting system being flawed and hope they do something about it after the season is over. I wonder if American Idol could sue that website for sabotaging the show and contest. Sanjaya is horrible and does not deserve to be there. Gina went home this evening and she was better than him, Haley and Phil. You are right as well with the hiring process at a company. Sometimes the least qualified or the least worthy gets hired or promoted. I know that I have felt in the past of being promoted but was turned down and the job was given to someone who did not work as hard and was much less productive.

It just is not right. In my mind, Sanjaya should have left a long time ago, well actually, he should not have been there at all. Gina has alot of talent, and if she had been given a chance to shine, I believe she would have blown us away. He rendition of Smile was right on the money last night. If you can make me feel the song, then you have done a good job. Sanjaya sings and I do feel something, yes I do, I feel nauseated! I would not want to ride the coat-tails of those who think I truly stink. What pride is there in that?

I have never been a fan of this show, and now having been exposed to it for the past few weeks, I am glad. Ok..the person who should not be there is awful. The people who unjustly lost to him have already had a tremendous amount of exposure, if they are really that good, someone has seen them and will make them an offer. If they do not deserve to get an offer, if they win or not makes no difference. Don't you feel the irony of needing to escape from your former escape?

I watch it usually every season and to me this is the worst one. to me sanjaya is the worst singer yet he is still there was shocked when he made it over sundance to the top 12 and now gina got knocked off. your right there r tons of vote for sanjaya web sights and it is sickening. I would like to see them do online voting unstead just the phones I wonder sometimes if votes are fixed. I don't know if I'd be more mad or hurt if I knew I was better than some. I really thought that gina would go a lot further I never thought she would win but though she'd atleast make it to the final 4 or something like that. It makes me wonder who all r voting and what they r thinking. am glad that melinda is still there she is my fav.

I agree-- I could not vote for someone because of a website- I would only vote if I thought that person deserved it- I loved your reasoning. If I lost a job opportunity to a less qualified person I would be mad- It is like stuffing the ballot box- However people are voting for him-- I fault these voters and much as the system. I think Idol needs a change-- Lets do it like Dancing with the Stars- Judges votes count for 1/2 of vote and America for 1/2. I bet Sanjaya would be gone then!

I would like to think he would be. People are so quick to jump on the band wagon, even if it treats others unfairly, aren't they? I also think one vote per phone number is in order.

I totally agree with you. This season has just disgusted me. The sad part is Sanjaya knows he shouldn't be there and the kid has gotten so smug about it. Last night when Gina was voted off it was the last straw. Haley has forgotten lyrics, let them make her up to look like a total hussy, even all Simon could come up with was "nice legs". I'm thinking I may be done watching the show. There are certain people on there (Melinda for example) that you know regardless will get a record deal, but the way the voting has gone has totally disheartened me.

I agree that Melinda will definitely have a deal regardless of what happens and she will do well, but what has become a boil on my butt is the unfairness of it all and the fact that, like you, I see Sanjaya becoming more and more smug about it. And, if this works, he will accept that contract and probably brag. It just isn't right.
