Good Apartment Dogs?

In your experience, what dogs are good to have in an apartment? I am moving next month and we are thinking about getting a dog. The apartment is small (1 bedroom, 725 sq. feet) but we have a patio and a lot of grass in the back for the dog to run and play. There is also a dog trail and park on the property. So, what are good apartment dogs? I read that any dog is good for an apartment, regardless of breed, it all depends how the owner cares for him/her. Do you think this is true?

I think if your dog is going to get plenty of exercise at the dog park, and you have a patio for it to have its little emergency pit stops, as you say many breeds would manage. The other thing, though, is how much room would a big dog take up in a small home? Will you be tripping over it constantly? Little dogs are great for apartment dwellers because they fit into the scale. You might want to think abut the noise factor, too, if you get a barker. Bichons and papillons are nice little dogs. Maybe an adult would be good, too, because that way you wold have a better handle on its personality?

Hey Molly whats up? Well in my personal experience I found a pitbull to be a great apartment dog and security system!lol As long as all the rumours and stories dont bother you about this breed then I highly recommend it. I have had one for 3 years now and lived in a few small apartments. This dog is incredible and so quite. I guess it all depends how you raise them. They seem very egar to please their owners and train very well. Anyways hope you find a breed you like!.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, we aren't allowed to have pitbulls at our apartment complex. A family that we knew had a dog (some kind of pitbull/terrier mix, I think) that needed a home and we wanted to take her in, but they wouldn't let us.. even though it was a mutt. The dog ended up having to be put down. It was so sad. Anyway, I wish we could get a pitbull, I think they are so cute and lovable. Ah well.

I think that every dog can live inside the house if you just let him what he needs. For example, if you have a wind dog that needs to run a lot, he doesn't fit to homes usualy, but if you let him run every day, he will be happy and feel good. Usualy the dogs that good to small houses are small dogs like Pakinese or Pincher. But you wrote that you will have in the appartment a grass so the dogs would be able to run there, so I suggest you to get a Labrador. He is not so big dog, and he can live inside the house all the time. It's an amazing dog that wants to make his owner happy all the time by obeying to his orders. Think about it.

I think that Yorkshire Terriers are good for apartments or a Dachshund, Papillon, Border Terrier... those size of dogs are not as small as the Yorkie but they are not too big that the space would be a problem. A lot of it does come to how you raise the dog - be careful not to leave the dog on its own for too long as that's when dogs get bored and become destructive.

I think it also depends on what's important to you. There are lots of dogs well-suited to apartment living, but it depends on what attributes you find important in a dog. There are some breeds that are hard to house-train, some breeds that are quite 'talkative', some that like to get into everything, some that shed a lot, some that shed very little. Are you planning to litter train the puppy for when you're not home to take them for a walk? Some breeds take to this better than others. How about your lifestyle? Do you go for a walk every night, or realistically, only every few days? If it's the latter, you might want to get a more low energy dog that would be well suited to just going outside for a potty break, rather than for a walk. Some breeds to look into might be the Chihuahua, Papillon, Italian Greyhound, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Havanese, Lhasa Apso or Pekingese. I've seen people with Greyhounds and Great Danes in their apartments, though. You may think it wouldn't work, but anyone with these breeds knows given the chance, they are HUGE couch potatoes, happy to go for their daily walk and spend the rest of the day watching afternoon soaps.

I don't have a dog in my apartment, but my neighbor does. She has a toy yorkshire terrier and he's pretty well behaved and a good size for a small place. He's so small that the apartment (which is probably closer to 500 square feet) seems big enough to him. Plus she takes him for walks often and we sometimes play catch with him in the front hallway. He's a pretty happy guy, and only barks when people are leaving him. But he usually quiets down pretty quickly. I think bigger dogs, or dogs that need to run more, might have a harder time in apartments, but small dogs seem to work well. There are many in our neighborhood.

I would have to say i believe in the saying of any dog is a good dog as long as the owner is good. In an appartment complex i would go for a smaller maybe a medium sized dog depending on how much yard you have, it also depends on how often and how far you intend to walk whatever dog you get. I prefer staffordshire terriers (staffys) they are a medium sized muscle dog and dont require a large yard as long as they get a good long walk or playtime each day. Staffys are generally good with most people and kids and are well liked and fairly easily trained. Best of luck in finding a dog to suit your needs.
