news is readily available. news is in short bursts, some of it very stupid {people interest junk], like who is designing what to wear this year. Also many of the pictures are too graphic. Entertainment on tv??? Get real please, usually its aimed at the mentality of a ten year old, or the language is so bad that I don't care to hear it. I do like the weather forecasts, and could do without all of the sports. Having cable or satalite television is better, it does give you more of a choice of what not to watch!

tv - Does this little box have too much influence in your life?
It depends on how much TV you watch and how much you believe in what you see. I tend to watch a couple of soaps regularly, I enjoy watching films and comedies. Comedy cheers me up. I like watching drams or soaps. A lot of the storylines in soaps are about real life situations that you might come across, I have seen issues dealt with like downs syndrome, depression, HIV, divorce, abortion, etc, all of which are real life issues (which might not apply to me) but obviously they are somewhat over the top as they have to be entertaining but you can learn from these issues and also you can be thankful that you do not have such issues in your own life. I enjoy watching shows which are educational but am not keen on reality shows about redesigning your home, for example, I find the presenters very patronising and I would seriously consider battering them with a hammer if they came into my home and said some of the things they say to people on the show. Cookery and gardening shows bore the hell out of me but some people learn from them. Everyone has different tastes and there is a wide variety available for everyone, not everyone will find even 80% of the stuff shown on TV of interest but even if 5% of it is useful to your real life, that's ok by me...:)
