I carry a small purse. I refuse to carry a piece of luggage around with me. Good grief, I'm going to the store, not to Mars! All I need most of the time is my wallet, checkbook and pen, and a teeny collapsible brush. Sometimes I put my cell phone or keys in there. Sometimes I carry a tube of lipstick or other small makeup item.
I actually used to carry a purse that was more like a wallet on a shoulder strap. It held my credit cards, checkbook and pen, and in rare cases, cash. It had a cell phone pocket on the outside. I LOVED it! Unfortunately, the shoulder strap broke after a couple years and I wasn't able to fix it or replace it.
The smaller the better! Then my husband can't hand me crap (like brochures, gum, business cards, his spare cell battery) and say "put this in your purse". I can honestly say "It won't fit, you'll have to carry it".

When I go out I always want a small bag inside a big bag which could carry all the rest of my things like sunglasses, medicine, umbrella, tissue paper, etc.

The bigger the better. I don't travel light. I lug around a lot of stuff. I always envied people who can keep a nice need little handbag but it doesn't work for me. I need a great big shoulder bag.

when i go shopping i would rather have a small purse, but i don't want it to get in the way, so it should be something i could sling over my shoulder or strap around my waist..

What I use really depends on the occasion.
Most of the time, I'd use a big bag. Big bags are great. I can stuff in just about everything and anything so I wouldn't have to carry them separately. This way, I won't end up losing my stuff. I'd use my big bag to carry books, cosmetics, shopping stuff, etc.
If I have a big occasion to attend to, I'd just carry a very small dainty purse. This would look best with my gown or outfit. I wouldn't need my daily essentials since this is most likely just a 2 to 3 hour event. I'd just carry the bare essentials. This would be powder and lipstick and perhaps a packet of tissue.

I do like both depending on my dress code or mood. I usually carry more of a small purse because I don't want my bag to be too heavy. Sometimes, I would carry a giant one if I am expecting to do some shopping (I could put everything in and I will look less clumsy). But the only bad thing for me on a big purse would be, I tend to bring a lot of stuff I don't even need just to fill in the bag *laughs*.
