I feel that depression should be understood by those close to you and they can offer support and be there when you really need them, or even when you don't. But I truly feel that depression is best treated with both medication and counseling along with family support. Depression isn't just caused because you are sad. Depression is caused by chemicals or lack of chemicals in your brain. While medication isn't always a sure fire answer, it does help. I think the best way to deal with depression is first, listen to your doctor and follow all recommendations.

hi ashish first of all it is important to distinguish lowness in mood from depression. low mood is wht we all go through at some time or the other. but clinical depression is a condition which starts affecting person's social, personal and professional life. causes of depression are varied like enviournmental, heredity, family history etc. but the ultimate effect is chemical imbalance in brain. prolonged depression causes lack of interest in everything. while the low moods can be solved b talkin 2 frnds, clinical depression needs proper medical attention. the cycle of depression has to be broken through medicines. when medicines dont work doctors go for the ECT treatment formerly known as the shock treatment. purpose is to get the person out of his present situation with the shock. so clinical depression needs medical attention: the sooner the better

Depression is certainly a growing problem nowadays, but there is a difference between depression (which is an illness) and having a low and difficult time. Depression is an "umbrella" term which covers many different types of mental health problems, so depending on the type of depression a person has, different treatments will be effective. Antidepressants are a crutch for most people (if the depression isn't chemical ie Bipolar people NEED to be on antidepressants, as their illness is physical as well as psychological), to help them before and during their treatment (therapy with a counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist, depending on the root of the depression), but support and understanding from friends/family is always a good thing. The simple answer to your question is that there is no simple answer :-) Support from loved ones is always helpful, but not necessarily a treatment in itself. The key thing is to visit a GP, who has the knowledge and experience to advise as to the best course of treatment. All the best, and I hope my answer is helpful to you :-)

It really helps if one can find someone who could support and listen to oneself. Depressive disorders make one feel exhausted, worthless, helpless, and hopeless. Such negative thoughts and feelings make some people feel like giving up. They tend to lose hope. It is important to realize that these negative views are part of the depression and typically do not accurately reflect the actual circumstances. Negative thinking fades as treatment begins to take effect. So treatment should be given along with support from friends and relatives who could care for the person in need.

Support from the near and dear is very essential when one is depressed. Encouragement should be given to the depressed to divert his attention elsewhere. They can visit places, meet new people, listen to Music, indulge in shopping and creative interests. Also there r Medicines which can help.. but do take them only on Doctors advice.

I feel convincing words from family and friends are enough for a person who is having depression. It can slowly make the person turn up to normal. I have faced depression and i was helped by friends and family members.time & words are good medicines to cure this.
