Can you please tell me what is the average weight a baby gains in the first 3 - 4 weeks. I had my babies many years ago and don't know much about this any more. My sister in law's daughter had a baby girl born with a hole in the heart, which many of you know about. What concerns me is when born she weighed 2.6kg and now 3.5 weeks later weighs 3.1kg. Has she gained enough weight. Appreciate all advise and comments.

She is a lovely little baby, we are hoping no operation will be necessary!

I had to find a calculator to convert kilograms to pounds before I could answer. It hard to say for sure if this is a good weight gain or not because she has the problem with her heart. If she was a perfectly healthy baby with no problems them it could be a concern. In pounds her weight gain equals 6.4 ounces if I've done the math right. That's not so good for a healthy baby, even if they did lose some weight at birth. My own gained 2-3 pounds over their birth weight in the first month, except for the one who has a mild heart condition. Babies with heart problems do tend to be smaller and not grow as fast so for her it's probably alright. When she goes for her check-ups with both her pediatrician and I'm assuming a cardiologist, her mother should make sure to get their opinions on her weight gain. It could be normal because of her heart problem or it could signal another problem. I wish your family and this baby the best of luck and hope everything turns out well for her!

She will be going for her checkup 16th April. We are all hoping the hole has closed on its own. Thanks for you kind wishes. We also hope everything is ok. Take care!
