In S.Africa it is common for people to sell 1 day old chicks on the road side. A few years ago I stopped to buy one for my children (or me). The guy came to the window and must have been fed up of these chickens he was selling because he dumped all 51 of them in my car. What a racket. When I arrived home with 51 chicks chirping and cheeping my husband almost had a fit. I explained there was nothing I could do they were dumped on me. (which they literally were). He was annoyed because he said WHEN... yes when, they died he was the one to sit with me and the kids crying. I was so cross with him, I told him my chicks WOULD NOT die. Anyway he built a nice little house and run for them, with the help of my brother, and guess what. All 51 chicks survived. I must add though, I have never stopped at the roadside to buy a chicken again!!LOL

This story is hysterical, this is a chicken and a half story. I laughed so loud my husband wanted to know what was so funny, and then I told him, and he too had a good laugh:)))What happened to all of them or shouldn't I ask?

We sold the property, and the chickens stayed with the new owners. This was about 12yrs ago. So those cute little chicks will be no more! Sorry!

Doesn't sound like you would ever need to get another chicken. Did you keep them as pets, eat them, sell them?

We kept them and they the laid lovely free range eggs. Unfortunately we moved to a smaller property. The people that bought our smallholding kept them on. Too scared to enquire if they ate my pets.
