My cat is approaching puberty.

My Banjo is almost 6 months old ...an age when he can have the operation to neuter him. He is sometimes smoochy and affectionate and seems like he can't get close enough and sometimes there is a hint of an odour. It's not unpleasant but not aromatic either and it fades quickly. What I want to know from people who have expereienced this is....what can I expect if I don't have him spayed and what can I expect if I do. (I've only ever had female cats). Hope someone can help me...thanks in advance.

I always spay my male cats as early as possible and have never had a problem. At 6 months old, it might be too late - a lot of males that are spayed late will continue to exhibit certain behavior such as spraying as a sign of dominance (rather than sexuality). I would definitely recommend spaying him for the simple fact that every responsible pet owner should. Your cat is already old enough to breed.

Thankyou very much. I always have my pets neutered. I know they won't do dogs before they are 6 months, I thought it may be the same for cats.

I was in touch with the vet yesterday. Banjo is booked in for the first of May to be neutered. Apparently they don't start showing their masculinity till they are about 8 months. I'm glad they told me this because looking at him, he looks too little to be capable of breeding.

if you don't have him neutered he will run off and breed all the females (more cat)and get in lots of fights and he will start to spray strong pee on everything ,making it his ... I have had many male cats and always had them neutered ,they have always been good hunter and good house cats ...

Oh my, I have never neutered a pet before or spayed one. I know it says to if you love your pet but I just could never have it done plus I love the baby kittens that come along once a year and love giving them to good families that will love and care for them. If a cat is let out enough they won't sray a house they will pray out side because mine never sprayed the inside of my house. Of course I let them out for a few hours a day to but some people can't do that if they live in a high trafficed area. I have heard though to let a female cat have a first litter of babies before she gets fixed. Don't know how true it is though.

spraying is a sign for male cats to express there dominance I am not sure might if you plan on getting him fixed I would call and find out what age they will do it some will not do it after 6 months or so and he is for sure getting ready to go into heat and when this happens every corner of your house will be marked for sure, and the howling will begin,.I have 4 females all but one is spayed and the youngest one not spayed just went through the first real bad heat stage boy do I wish I would of got her fixed.lol howl oh my, you feel sorry for them at least I do.

Yeah, the smell alone is really bad. It's indescribable, and it will drive you crazy until you steam clean your carpets.

Get him neutered as soon as possible, unless you actively plan on controlled breeding from him its completely unfair to the neighbourhood to have an unneutered Tom wandering about. Boy cats are terribly affectionate, my kitten was done a few weeks ago and he still loves to climb into bed with us for cuddles in the morning.

You can expect that he will spray in the House do disappearing acts for Days because a Cat is on heat Roaming away from the Home and could be gone for Days If you have him done He will not spray in the House, he will not disappear when he senses a cat on heat and he will not wander far from Home and he will be very lovable Tomcats are more loving then Females I have 3 Females and one Tom (Who has been spayed) and he is the most loving one out the 4

I agree with the others that you should get it done as soon as you can because once they start spraying it's a mess. After they are fixed most cats become more loving and even better tempered. There are your odd balls who don't but over all they do. Between males and females, females you can wait on if need be but you keep them where they aren't with others, where as males you need to get done as soon as possible if not you will regret it.

Oh get him neutered - he will be so much better for it. If you don't, he wil very soon turn into the kind of cat that only comes in when he's hungry, because the rest of the time he will be out looking for a mate! Male cats will travel miles in search of a female, so he will start staying out for days at a time, and run the risk of beng run over on the way, or getting lost. He will also start fighting with other males on the same quest, which will run the risk of abscesses and the infections that go with them. The neutering operatin is quick and simple........ you will take him into the Vets in the morning and be able to collect him at night. Four of my 5 cats are males, and they all got through their surgery with no problems, and were running and playing within an hour of getting home.It is much better and healthier forhim, as well as cutting down on the mber of sad, unwanted strays produced in this world.

6 months is the ideal age to get done. Its better to get him done, because the chances of testicular cancer drastically reduces, and the odour will only get much stronger if he is not done.
