putting bike together

i bought my daughter an ariel bike for easter. i just put it together and it took me almost 2 hours. i gave up on the directions, they were too confusing and no help. it would say put this part to that put like shown in the pic. and there was a little black and white picture that didn't show much. anyway i did better with out it. do you follow the instructions when putting things together?
