I also agree that you should begin your search for your new best friend in the shelters and rescues. There are so many homeless animals in desprate need of a good loving home. Tens of thousands are put to sleep every day in the US because there simply aren't enough homes for them all.It is a horrible plight for so many types of animals. It isn't just cats and dogs, it's guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, rats, hamsters birds and any other animal you can think of. Buying animals from breeders and pet stores only perpetuates this heartbreaking problem. Please help put an end to this madness created by greed. Do not buy a pet, adopt your new family member. It is well worth the wait to find the pet just right for you!

Now I don't say I agree with this. I have purebred dogs and they were bought from responsible breeders, because showing purebred dogs is my hobby and passion. Buying from pet stores is always a bad idea, but buying a puppy from a responsible breeder can be a rewarding experience as the good ones are there for you for the lifetime of the puppy, always ready to offer advice, take your dog in for boarding if you're on vacation or to help you out with behavioral issues. They also do appropriate health testing for your breed to ensure your puppy is healthy and long-lived. As a former rescue coordinator, I know that 3/4 of the dogs that come through rescue were either bought from backyard breeders (breeders looking to cash in and make a buck off a breed's popularity with no regard for health testing or breeding for the betterment of the breed) or pet stores where the former owners thought little 'Rex' looked so cute in the window of the store and had to 'rescue' him from living in a small glass cage. Puppies from responsible breeders rarely, if ever, end up in rescues or shelters (and if it is, it's not for long) because they are almost always willing to take the dog back, regardless of age, to either rehome or live out their life where they were born. They don't want any of their 'babies' to end up in a bad situation, and usually do rigorous interview processes with prospective puppy owners just to prevent that. Granted, there are too many homeless animals in shelters, but few are actually purebreds, too many are the result of people not spaying and neutering their pets and having 'Oops' litters. The blame lies in the hands of pet owners across the world for not having their animal altered when they should be.

We have a 7 month old golden. we bought him from a breader and paid $500.00 for him and he sure was worth every penny. They are great dogs. When we first started looking for a golden to buy, we were told by many people not to buy from pets shops or just anyone, to look around and do research plus my boyfriend had owned three in his life already.Luckily my boyfriend had worked with a guy for several years and found out his goldens were having a third litter, so we bought from someone that we knew we could trust.$500.00 was not a lot considering another place sold them for over a $1000.00.(this is in Canada) So aside from the inital cost , there is so much more. We buy science diet food for our dog and it is expensive.you don't have to get that kind, but it is one of the best. Vet costs are expensive, it would need all it's shots and check ups. It would need lots of chew toys cause they love to chew. Then there are the dishes, the collar, the leash. I am not trying to discourage you but if you want to get a golden, I would recommend waiting until you can buy one from a trusted breader and just make sure you take into consideration all of the other expenses. They need a lot of exercise and i don't think they should be left alone a lot and if you wanted to go away for a week end you need to take your dog or find someone to take care of him while your gone.I am mentioning all of this because i don't think i quite realized all the work involved in having a dog, but it is worth it, They are wonderful dogs and i am sure you would be a great owner, just really think about all the aspects of owing one first. Also there are many websites online just about goldens.

Just remember its not just the initial cost of purchase of any dog, its on going, a commitment for life, there is vet check, feeding, worming, vaccinations, food etc.... But try local shelters, go and have a look, you might just fall in love with something different.

You can check your local shelters, or do a search for Golden Retriever rescue organizations in your area. Oftentimes people get Goldens because they think they're the perfect dog, but even perfect dogs need to be walked or paid attention to, so they end up dumping them, and they need good homes. Sometimes there's a fee, but basically it's just to cover the cost of taking care of the dog while it was in rescue, or a donation back to the rescue to help more dogs. That might be an option.
