Recently I had an analysis over some wesites those have high ranking in major search engines. I found that those sites contain tons of inbound links. Shall I conclude, "HAVING TONS OF IN-BOUND LINKS WILL RANK A SITE VERY WELL" or it's a myth.

Its not a myth - Having tons of in bound links will rank your site very well but it also depends on other factors too. You can have a site with just 50 inbound links beat out a site with 1000 inbound links. Quality of the links, as well as the anchor text used to link to the site, relevancy of the site linking to your site etc. as well as how good your site is optimized for the term you are trying to rank for.

It will help to improve ranking, but it is certainly not the only factor. To be on the top you need a combination of good quality incoming links, good, up to date and original content (the hardest issue, from my point of view) and SEO friendly website design (your file names match your keywords, etc). It's hard work.

Its a myth as lot of links in a site is not important rather the links should be of the same nature i.e of same interest and topic and the links should be systematic.

Thanks Jayalaksmi for great suggestion. Then conclusion will be, "Tons of in-bound links will only rank a site if those contain the keywords that we want to rank for" Is it correct now!!!

It is not the number of links, but the link qulity. Links must be from relitive sites in your catgory and useing your keywords. The anchored text from both sites must use your main keywords. This is how relevent your site is and how Page rank is determined. If you are asking about page possition, I have sevral page one ranked 1- 10 on my keywords, with a 0 pagerank and not that many links. So wich are you lokeing for Pagerank, that is link popularity and page relivence? Or getting your site listed on apge one?

Search engines rank the websites based on number of keywords in the page, number of external links and sometimes how many websites from linking to the site.
