Freeze damage after record highs

Here in Arkansas we set record all time high temperatures in the middle of the week. (Egads, Global Warming! Thank God Al Gore warned us!) Then come this weekend we have freezing nights. This morning when I woke up it was 24 degrees. The leaves are frozen and dead on some of my favorite ornamental trees. I've never had that happen before. If the leaves freeze on a small tree (4 feet tall) does it ever kill the tree? Will they fall off and new leaves come on still this spring? Or, will I have to wait until next year for these trees to get green again?

T went for a walk yesterday. The trees that were hit hardest were the ones just getting their leaves. I clasped onto a few, and the leaves crumpled in my hands. It was as if they had been freeze dried. Hopefully new leaves will take their place.

Same thing happened in Kentucky. It was 85 degrees on two separate days last week. This morning it was 22 and we have had snow flurries all day! It hasn't gotten past 30 degrees and it is 5 PM. Weird. I don't know the answer about your leaves, sorry!

Wow, you win. Your weather is worse than mine! At least we did not have any snow. At least not, yet.

We are setting record low here in GA also. I think the leaves comes back later on. Is it possible to cover them with a plastic or sheet. If you cover them, it might decrease the damage.

The drought has taken most of my young trees. That El Nino wind blows so hot and hard and so long it just dries the leaves out. Next day they fall off. This happened at least twice with my trees that lasted. I would keep watering and eventually there would be some new green. It was just too much tho and they've all gone bar 2. I think one of those is on it's last legs too. The new buds are exposed ...they've withered and browned...there are still green fronds below inside the sacking that's protecting it but I don't have any hope. It's quite depressing really. Apart from the money, i was so looking forward to having some lovely shady trees and some fresh fruit.

It must be too bad to be going through such freezing temperatures. I wonder if those trees will ever survive the ordeal. It is a cruel climate you are having. I hope that will never take place again.
