PS3 price drop?

United States

I recently read an article about new Blu-ray players that will cost $600, a drop from their old price of around $1,000. Obviously, Blu-ray technology is getting cheaper to produce, so do you think this means that the PS3 will see a price drop sometime soon, too?

I think of all the next gen consoles the PS3 is by far the best one out there, even with its $599 price tag. If I remember correctly sony was taking a loss on the first run of the PS3's, and may still be on each unit today. They were doing that to try to win the war versus HD DVD's, since they are backing Blu-ray. What I like about the PS3 is that is so much more than just a videogame console. With blu-ray you have hd movies and it does provide the most processing power of any gaming unit. It will also have a longer life span than the xbox 360. Microsoft seems to want to replace their console (like they do with the windows operating software) every 2-3 years. They stop supporting and making new games for the old consoles. The original xbox has no new games coming out. Soon they will come out with a new xbox and stop making games for the 360. So if you do the math, you can $599 for a system from sony that will be around for 10 years, or you can buy a new xbox every 3 years at a cost of $400-500. $400 x 3 = 1200 over ten years. Whereas the sony system is $599 for 10 years. Hmm...which is the better value? And I'm sure the PS3 will come down in price eventually but that won't be for a couple years based on ps1 and ps2 trends. The Wii is cool, but its little more than a fad, offering ps2 graphics, and neat controller. As $250 it's not a big deal just to pick up one for fun.
