Well mannered, temptress or is waiting on the poison taster? I dont know!

When I put the two bowls of dinner on the floor and call both of my chihuahuas to dinner. Pepi, the male, gulps his dinner down in 2 seconds flat and ends with a resounding belch. My dainty female, Schatzie, sits next to her dish and watches him carefully. Only when he is finished does she carefully smell hers and eat one tiny bite after another, keeping a careful eye on Pepi who it now watching her carefully, until she cleans her plate. She does this every day at dinner time now what is she doing... watching to see that it's not poisoned and he eats it all, being a dainty lady who never gulps her food or teasing him because she know he always wants more? What do you think?

I have to admit that I got a chuckle from reading your post. She is waiting for him to eat first because she is a submissive female to his domaint personality.I have noticed this kind of behavior with my own dogs except my female dog has made our males submissive to her.

That's what makes it so funny as she is the aboslute boss in everything else and he knows it. Tomorrow is their birthday she will be four and he will be one year old..maybe she'll let him have some of her food then LOL

Heheh well it sounds like she is being submissive in letting him eat first but then it could be she just doesn't like to rush. She knows he's watching her and likes to take her time.
Now our collie will share her food with the cats and even let them take out of the bowl first. She will eat small amounts at a time, taking a bite over away from the bowl to eat it and then coming back. I think each dog has their own routine and they don't care about what others think of them.

Lololol I think she is teasing him well and truly there as I know Gissi used to do this to Cookie now and again not all the time but he did at times lol
So I would say she is being a little Tease there and he falls for it everytime lol

HA! That is so funny and cute. My female always ate first then allowed the male to eat. She is like a goat and will eat anything, whereas he is very careful and cautious before he eats anything. I think she is letting him taste it first and if he does not get sick then she will savor the taste in front of him. She is trying her best to show him how to eat slowly and how to enjoy his food instead of gulping it down like a hog. She will realize one day there is no way to train a man at the dinner table and may give up!

I just think that she is a lady, she's a tease too, but a lady first. Men disgust her and she loves to bloat that she savors her bites and has little or no indigestion when it's over. THe thought of Belching to her is just not an option! She is class and a proper pedigree. You should be most proud. Now Pepi on the other hand needs to go back to Manners 101A LOL.... but aren't they a joy nonetheless?

I've seen dogs do this before. I never thought it was submissive, but that makes more sense than my personal theory. I always thought that the second dog only ate because the first dog wanted all the food. Like it was motivated by some weird head game. Now that I think about it, I don't know why a dog would think like that. But I have seen dogs drop one tennis ball to go after another that is in the other dog's possession, lol!
