How much time should I allow my 5 year old on the computer?

I always hear about limiting TV time and I agree. But what about the computer? What if it is educational? Does it make any difference? Should computer time be separate from TV time or should it all be lumped together?

I would limit it. I think kids need to be outside playing or anything active.

I would still limit the computer time. If you do not, then your child may want to spend all their time there. Some children spend hours a day on Nintendo, and other games. All can be educational, but limits are necessary. Kids will want to spend alot of time doing "fun" things, and computer games are designed to make learning fun. I see no problems with that, but if they can spend several hours a day off and on the computer, then it becomes a habit, and by the time they are teens they want to spend all their time there instead of going outside. My son was such a junkie... we finally got him interested in football which took up most of his time, but it was always a battle until then to get him away from the games and out of the house.. I would not lump it in with TV time. They are two seperate things. Hopefully on the computer, your child is interacting with the programs and not just watching, like with TV. I hope this helps..

I think at the age of five your child should not be allowed to use the computer unless there is side by side supervision This is a wonderful tool for education, entertainment, and a host of other things It is also a very dangerous place for little children, or even young teens, to be allowed to explore freely Use this TOOL wisely please

I think TV time and computer time are seperate if the time on the computer is for education. i would say no more than 2 hours on the computer and I would be right by there side the time they were on the computer.

I think it should be lumped togather when the computer time isnt educational! If he is doing something, or playing a game that is educational then I say let him spend a good amount of time on it.
