Is it just me or has Scrubs been depressing lately?

The last few episodes have been more depressing than funny, IMO, and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this? There are funny moments but the show on the whole has had a sad undertone to it. Starting at the beginning of the season with JD's girlfriend saying she lost the baby then having an ultrasound showing a perfectly healthy baby! Now, most recently Laverne died! Are they trying to switch from comedy to dramady (comedy & drama) or what?!
