Is Posting Children’s Pictures Online Dangerous?

What do you think about parents posting pictures of their children on the internet? I don’t consider myself paranoid, but I do not post photos of my kids online. I think the decision for parents to post their children’s photos on the internet is a very personal one and I never judge those parents who do, but I hope that they realize that anyone can be viewing those photos, even online pedophiles.

I too have the same query. I've been wanting to post my baby's pictures because I am so proud of him and I want the world to know that he is my baby. However, I am hesitant because it might not be safe. :(

We are all proud of kids and a website with a password protected gallery is an alternative to sharing photos with close friends.

I saw an episode of Without a Trace where a woman found a family website and Photoshopped herself into the pictures with the child and later tried to claim him as her son, saying that the real father was a kidnapper. It really showed that it can be a terrible idea to put your child´s photos up online. However, I don´t think it is bad to have one or two as I do for my avatar. It´s when you are loading the internet with your kid´s shots that I would consider it dangerous.

If I had kids I would not feel comfortable at all posting their pictures online. Like you said you never know who looks at them and I wouldn't want to put them in any kind of danger

I really don't see to much harm in it. I have eleven nieces and nephews and ten of them have pages on Myspace. The eleventh one is only a year old and that is the only reason he does not have his own page. Pedophiles are going to look, because that is what they do. We can't keep our kids hidden in a cage for the rest of their lives. This is the new way that they express themselves and they should not be deprived. However, we live in a big city. If we lived in a little old dinky small town, I would be more nervous. Kids today are a lot smarter and more informed than we were growing up. They have to be to keep up with the changing styles. If you notice, in the news, there are a lot of teachers being convicted of molesting children. It is not that it is something new, it's that the children know now that a teacher can be wrong and they can speak out about abuse and be believed and protected.
