I'm thinking about tutoring students as a 2nd job. Have you done this?

I went back to college when I was 33 yrs old and got a 2 yr degree in Business Management. In my second semester I was approached by 2 of my professors who asked me if I'd like to be a school sponsored tutor. I needed the money and I love to teach so I agreed. For the Business Accounting class I tutored one on one and I had 3 students. They paid me by the hour. For the Computer class I was a teacher's assistant and basically just walked around during class and helped answer questions when the teacher was busy. I also got paid by the hour for that.
I was never a tutor outside of the college setting so I don't know what kind of state licenses, if any, might be required if you do it on your own.
If you'd like to do it on your own, you might contact your local school/college and find out if they hire outside tutors and what the requirements are for your area.
In my situation I both loved it and hated it. 2 of the students they gave me just didn't care about the subject at all and were very uncooperative no matter what I tried. The 3rd however was a joy to work with and I felt that I really did this person a lot of good. It made me feel very good to be able to help him. He went from failing the class to a final grade of B- for the semester.
If you enjoy teaching but don't want to go thru extra college courses, then tutoring is a good alternative.
