How many times do you have to ask your child to do something before they will do it? 10, 20, or 30,000?

Sometimes they dont it doesnt matter how many times I say it. I might as well be talking to a brick wall.

I was wondering if you think it has to do with their energy levels at the time. I take privileges away and stand them in the corner, but then they tell me what a mean and hateful person I am.

My Monsters, well 4 of them! - Kids at cousin's house. Josh, Caleb, Blake, Levi and Mommy!
What? Do they actually even do it after you ask them 30,000 times????? lol Mine don't. I just started a discussion about them fighting all the time. I have 4 boys and then I got my girl and they are all such spoiled little brats that I want to rip my hair out by the roots the majority of the time! I need to start being more consistant! I should ask them to do it ONE time and when they don't comply, they should be sent to the corner or have a time out instantly...but they wear me down man! And I end up getting lazy and not doing it after a while. Bad, Bad, Bad. I have to do something with them before my address is the local mental hospital! Good Luck with yours!

Thanks for the response. I needed to know that my children are normal and that they are not just being purposely defiant every single minute of the day.

Sorry but I had to laugh when I read this. I can see the frustration in your words. My son is 22 and has two boys of his own. The mothers curse is now in play. I went over there yesterday and the kids were driving him nuts and I just stood there and smiled, then I proceeded to tell him how he used to be. So, don't worry, pay back will someday come.lol. But to answer your question, I don't think they ever listen and if they do, it is forgotten in just a few seconds. My boyfriends 15 year old son lives with us and its a big deal whenever we ask him to do something. He has to be constantly reminded of everyday things like flushing the toliet and rinsing the sink out after he brushes his teeth. I have even gone as far as putting up notes on the wall in big letters. Its frustrating. But I know they hear, just try to whisper something to someday that you don't want you to hear. They will hear it everytime.lol.

Sorry, I must have been half asleep when I wrote that. It should say "just try to whisper something to somebody that you don't want your kids to hear".

So do you think my children are stubborn or is this a matter in the difference in parenting skills?

Yes they are quite normal. Kids will ignore you if they do not believe what you say or if they think they can get away with it. I think we have all 'gotten lazy' like Stephanie (hope I spelled that right) I try to stay with the 1-2-3 method. I tell her that is 1, I say two that is 2, I rarely get to three because that is punishment time. If I could do this EVERY time it would work, but alas I get lazy also.

do me a favour if you find out will you let me know please lol , My sons are now aged 44,41 and 26 and I still have to say things over and over , I used to keep their pocket money back if they didn't listen or do what they were told but they are a bit too old for that now lol , My youngest still lives with us (rossdcurran) on the site , I keep asking if he hears me and he says " yes Mam I hear you but I am not listening )" cheeky monkey lol . I would bribe them , say no pocket money until you listen and do what I ask please , usually works xx

Mine, I just need to ask them the most 3 times. Because, they know that once I opened my eyes big and raised my voice a little, they have to get their butts moving. They knew the consequences if they did not heed my instructions. No TV for the rest of the day and they have to do extra homework. :
