Smoking

I just read a post from a so called friend of mine and it made me so infuriated I had to post this. I know I will get some bad replies because in the eyes of a smoker they are always right. My Grandpa died from lung cancer caused by smoking and I promised I would never smoke after that. Both me and my brother did start smoking. I gave up 4 years ago now and sometimes I still crave for one, but I won't smoke and here is the reason why. It gets on your clothes and in your hair. When you light up a cigarette you are killing another persons lungs. That person could be a none smoker and worse still a young baby. I think as a none smoker you should have rights over a smoker because it is your choice to not smoke. Also a smoker is killing other people. A baby doesn't have a choice. When you go in a cafe and there is smoking and none smoking you can still breathe in the smoke. When you are sat on a bench and someone comes next to you and starts smoking I think they should consider you first. I think there should be designated places for smokers in a place as far away possible from none smokers as you can get. Roy Castle was an English celebrity who never smoked, but died of lung cancer due to passive smoking. What are your opinions on this? The other person has asked only for people who favour her opinion about smoking, but I would like to hear from everyone and not just none smokers or smokers. What does it make you feel like when I say that smokers are killing other people as well as themselves? What are your general feelings about smoking? I have nothing against people who smoke it is just that smoking is different from being an alcoholic or drinking caffeine because you are harming other people. I think it is important smokers took more responsibility about what they do.

I make sure to be careful around non-smokers to ensure they are not being ridened by my own second hand smoke. I do not smoke inside because it tends to stink up a house, anyways. Saying that it is my right to smoke as long as I am not hurting anyone else. If you want to say I am still hurting people by pollution then I could just bring up the fact that most everyone drives a car, and you do not see pedestrians yelling at driver's to stop hurting babies. I think it is completely irresponsible for a mother to smoke while having a kid, but I will [hopefully] never become pregnant so I cannot speak for this case. If the goverment made smoking illegal I would be quite happy, though. If I had a calm day of doing nothing all day I am sure I would be able to find the time to quit, but as it is now this is not something that will happen within the next couple years.

Wow at last it is nice to hear from a responsible smoker I had almost given up thinking that there were any responsible smokers from the posts I have read. It is nice to at last read someone that considers other people when they smoke. I respect that you have a right to smoke it is the fact, that most smokers do not think of other people.

Good Day! You have some interesting points about the smoking debate. I am a Smoker who is trying to quit(not an easy feat). I have many non-smoking friends and I always consider them when I've felt like a smoke by going outside or moving away from them. Everyone knows the health risks when it comes to smoking but there are also far greater health risks as well when one lives in a city.I think some smokers become peeved when the non-smokers preach that we are killing them with second hand smoke, well smokers can say are you sure the the enviromental toxins pumped into the air for factories, pulp mills, coal plants, the exhaust from cars. Smog in all major cities is not made from smokers and there are more toxins that are inhaled on a daily basis. Children inhale these when the go to school, the park, get in your vehicle and drive somewhere. Many non-smokers preach clean air and then drive and contribute to the planets polution and killing everyone as well as smokers. So I think for some of us smokers who see it's just not us contributing to bad air it's everyone, I seems we are the ones that are the easy targets for the complaints. I think this debate will go on for ever or until they make smoking illegal and stop making them. Then it will be interesting to see what they will blame Lung Cancer on.

When comparing smoking and toxins from factories, it brings me back to what my mom used to say, two wrongs don't make a right.

If I am in a smoker's home, and they light up, it is my responsibilty to leave. That is their home. If I'm sitting on a bench in the park, and someone sits next to me and lights up, I have every right to ask them to put it out, because I was there first. I like the fact that smoking has been banned in restaurants. At work, smokers should smoke outside. Even if they don't intend for their smoking to hurt someone else, it can. Although, I have heard that someone in government is trying to make it legal to not hire someone based on the fact that they smoke. That is discrimination. It isn't right to deny someone a job over their smoking preference, as long as they smoke outside or in a designated room for smokers. I know it is an addiction, but I wouldn't want to smoke. People can smell it on you. You get near them and you back away almost unvoluntarily because they smell of smoke. They don't stink, like someone who hasn't bathed, they just smell of smoke. Not to mention, their teeth get stained, although a coffee drinker might experience that to the same degree. Everyone has their rights, but consideration for others should be ingrained in us. We shouldn't have to enforce it.

ok first i will admit i am a smoker but please read on cause i am not going to jump down your throat. this is a major debate that goes on and on. no smoking in restuarants dont bother me i can understand that. i do think though it should be up to the owner on if they want it or not. if non smokers dont want smokers there then they should skip that place to eat at it isnt like there arent enough places to eat at. i can understand both sides though. as far as sitting on a bench and a non smoker is there and a smoker comes up i think if a person is sitting there and another comes up before they just sit and light up they should ask does this bother you and if it does then the smoker can move away. no big deal. that is just common curtisy. i do that alot of times when i am at the park with my kids. i have kids and i smoke but i do not blow it in there face or cage them in the car with it if i smoke in the car all windows are down etc. if you think about it though smoking is not the only lung issue. we have 3 paper mills here that put off all kinds of things and smells that isnt good for you. have you drove into dallas off of 30 you can see the smog from cars and and factorys. do you use hairspray and your kids in teh room? do you use wasp spray? there are alot of things. i am not saying that smoking doesnt hurt but so do other things and i have never heard a person say i went into the bathroom to pee at some place and the person was spraying hair spray and start complaining about that. but if a person was smoking in there they have a fit. to me hairspray smells bad takes my breath and is horriable. to others cigg smoke is that way. all i am saying is that no matter what spray or smog etc you are putting off see if it bothers others around you. use kindness and thought for others. i am a smoker but i do consider others . alot of non smokers though dont think about others like omg some of the perfume and colone they wear lol. it makes me sneeze, gag, and eyes water up. i have had alot of people in my life die from cancer and such so i know ciggs kill but so does other things. why only come down on smokers when tehre are other things putting off more and just as bad if not worse fumes in the air. why not complain about that as well?

I agree with you. It aggravates me so much to be going to the store or the mall with my daughter and have to walk by a big cloud of smoke because someone is smoking right next to the entrance. Smokers should take this into consideration. I used to be a smoker and would never smoke anywhere near kids or other non smokers. I just think there needs to be designated smoking areas a certain distance away from entrances to stores. I think in some cities they are starting to do this.

I smoke and i love it. It will leave me one day, but for now, i like it. I must say i agree with you 100% infact, the only thing that stops me lighting up is the proximity of others, and every smoker should consider this. because when i quit i will be very very very in their faces. fight the good fight brother

I totally agree with you about this. A smoker has a choice to smoke or not, when they are in public and smoking they dont give the nonsmokers any choice because they are polluting the same air as them. Nothing makes me more mad then to go to a resturant with my almost 2 year old and 3 month old and someone lights up next to me. I will kindly ask them to put it out in regards to my kids lungs or ill move in the resturant. My kids lungs are new and fresh and they dont need anyones help to pollute them. Another thing that makes me sick is when you see smoking in the car with little kids in the backseat and all the windows rolled up like noting os wrong with this. Its like dont you see the kids that they are affecting.

In the state where I live, there is a law that is being pushed here to outlaw smoking in cars. Some people said that is infringing on thier rights. In another state where some relatives live, there "is" a law that prohibits "anyone" from smoking in a schoolzone. So there are people who have spoken up about this issue and apparently have been taken seriously.

I just respond to one of this discussion too. I do said that smoking hurts other people. Sorry for all the smokers out there, but it you want to smoke please be consider to other people especially the one that next to you. I have few friends who are smoke too, and they never smoke in front of me. They always go to somewhere else like a park or yard to smoke. If they really want to smoke inside room, they will asked other people first. And if they said no, they will accept that. That what i asked from all smokers, at least be consider to other people first.

i think smoking is a very bad as well as a hazardous thing.it should be stopped to protect the health of healthy people.i have heard in news and papers that smoking damage the lungs of the people very badly.but so many people doing smoking even after knowing its bad impact on their health.so in my opinion it should be stopped by encouraging the people.

Wonderful account, congratulations, smokers are very selfish and usually dirty with their butts and care only for themselves and rip bosses off for their time out smoking, they should have a certain amount of time to do it or face the sack if they still want time out to smoke.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I am a smoker, but I do appreciate other people. I will never smoke in a public place where there are other people around. I dont smoke near my children at all. I have a conscious and dont smoke just where ever I would like to. So for me personally I am considerate to my upmost best.

I agree with you very much, but most smokers don't consider others, they just think smoking is wonderful for them and also other people,I just want to say them sometimes are selfish. But I also know that a lot of them have no choice and they can't stop smoking by themselves.

I have been a smoker for 17 years. I do not hurt anyone else by my smoking. I do not smoke in public places or in my home. I hurt no one but myself. It calms my nerves and I do not see that anyone should have an opinion on my choices. Most people do not even realize that I am a smoker. I could understand being angry about the pushy smokers who donot care who is in their presence, but there are many of us who do not bother a soul with our bad habits.
