how do you respond to your friend when he says his father is expired suddenly?

when it was a boring evening the telephone rang hardly. i picked the receiver and said heelo! i heard a cry and i recognised that it was my close friend. i asked him for the reason of his cry. he said his father was expired just now and he kept the receiver. i was unable to go to his house that evening hence i ent to his house the next day. i made myself silent the whole day. i didn't talk to him that day. is my reaction right. or tell me a simple reaction on that spot and a dialoge to respond.

I think the best thing to do is tell him that you are sorry to hear about his dad. Ask if there is anything you can do for him. Would he like for you to come over. Often times, it also depends on the person, sitting with them in their time of need is best. If you don't know what to say don't say anything, just be there for them and comfort them.
