We just started making our own baby food for our little one. We have a magic bullet and pretty much blend everything up in there. It's a great way to make sure your little one gets 'natural' foods, without any additives or substitutes. How do you make yours? We either use the water from the veggie we just steamed or boiled and add that, or if it's like fruit, we add a little bit of bm, since it has lots of nutrients. Let's share recepies and experiences!

As you know, I haven't started solids just yet but will be soon. I plan on making it myself. The way I see it, he's gone this long without additives and processed foods, why start now. I started a discussion under cooking about homemade baby food. There are a few recipes and tips on there that you're more than welcome to check out too. Jarred food might seem more convenient but it can't be as healthy and it's definitely more expensive. I was checking prices and I can get one pound of bananas for about $.60. Just one container of baby food costs $1.19! All I have is a Smoothie maker but since it really seems like a regular blender with just a spout added at the bottom I'm hoping it will work just as well for this.

I agree that it's much less expensive to make your own babyfood. I bough one sweet potato for like $.65 and made 5 servings/feedings for lo. If I was to buy just one jar, it would be at least $1.00. That's not to say that I might not get some jar foods when we're in a pinch, but right now he's at a stage where he isn't really dependent (could take it or leave it stage) that he's fine just formula, but what i'm planning on doing is maybe buying a few jars to give him and save them to store OUR food when we go out. What do you think, does that make sense, or does it sound like a dumb idea?

That makes a lot of sense. You'll need something to put it in for when you're out and they are the perfect size. I was thinking about getting the little baby bowls with snap on lids but I'm not sure how well they actually seal. Getting the baby food jars would probably be less risky.

I was thinking about getting contaiers with snap lids too, but it just made more sence to buy a few of the jarred foods and keep them so we can put OUR food in there for when we go out. Actually, what I can do, is I can ask my mom to keep a few of the jars for me since she has a daycare and the parents bring babyfood. That way i'll save $$, even if it is just a few dollars.

I was making it for all his first foods, but now that he is older and eating more I havent really been doing it anymore. I got al my recipies from http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com Thats where I learned pretty much everything. I just used water if it needed to be thinned and rice cereal if something was too watery, and because of all the nitrate issues with carrots, I just bought those in the jar.

I am also planning to make my own baby food when I start giving my daughter solids next month. You should definately check out the website that the previous poster recommended. I have read a little bit on it, and it has alot of great information. I think your plan to buy a couple of the jars sounds very logical. I plan to do the same thing. Making baby food is definately more work, but I think it's worth it. I am a stay at home mom, and I look at it as one more job on my countless list! It saves us money and is great for the baby. Good luck to you, and I'll let you know if I find any great tips or tricks once I start.

I will definetly check the website out, every bit of info helps so much. I'm a stay at home mom too and I just can't believe with having one baby how much more work the house needs. Not to mention how much the laundry load has increased. Making your own food is a bit time consuming, but it's so much better for your lo and much less expensive too. I figured since I can't bf him anymore, I can do the next best thing, give him home made food, with all it's nutrients. I'll share my tips and trick as I go along too.
