We just took my dog to the vet and got her tested and she was positive. Do you have any advice on what is the best heartworm medicine and also how much was it?

I am sorry to hear that! My dog had it when he was one and it was a horrible experience for him. They had to virtually kill him to kill the worm. I didn't pay for the treatment but it was intensive so I imagine it was pricey. It was worth it, as he is still alive today after all these years. Best wishes for your dog.

I think you need to get your dog back to the vet immediately to see what he suggests can be done for your dog. Quite frankly, until reading some of the responses, I didn't realize that there was a cure for heartworm. If that is indeed the case, I am shocked that your vet did not suggest something. Every year, our vet holds a heartworm clinic over the course of 4 days where he checks the dogs in the area to make sure that they don't have heartworm. Then he prescribes medication for them that they take once a month. This medication is a preventative, though, not a cure. If you are going to be a pet owner, you need to be a responsible one. That means that you need to get the yearly shots, have your dog fixed, and ensure that your dog is kept healthy and happy. Right now, while your dog is ill, and heartworm is an extremely serious, life threatening illness, is not the time to go bargain shopping for a medicine. Get to your vet and find out immediately what you can do so that your poor dog won't have to suffer needlessly.

I am soo sorry your dog has heartworm! I think your best bet might be to call around to vets in your area to see what the price of the medicine might be. Also look around online. You might find something that is less expensive, even though you might want something more top of the line. But when money is tight you gotta go with what works, right? I wish I new of something herbal you could just lace his food with to get rid of the heart worm. If there was something like that it might be extremely inexpensive! Check around on the internet and see if there is an herb that might work! My thoughts are with you.

I'm so sorry to hear that! When we adopted Bob, our Plott Hound, he was heartworm positive and we had to go through several steps to get rid of them. I'll be completely honest, it was a bit of a nightmare with all the treatments he had to have and it cost quite a bit. All in all it cost about $500 over the course of several months. I don't remember exactly what medications (there were several) they gave him but he had active adult heartworms so they had to treat those first, and then treat the larvae. It sounds like you guys probably caught it quite a bit earlier than the rescue group did, so it shouldn't be such an ordeal for you and, hopefully, it wont cost as much either. Bob had to stay overnight at the vet's several times since they were giving him so much medicine (which is essentially a pesticide) and they needed to moniter his progress. Just be glad you caught it early. If left untreated, heartworms will kill a dog slowly and painfully. We now use Interceptor as a preventative measure for the dogs on a monthly basis and have them tested annually. I believe it costs around $40 for a 6 month supply. Good luck and let us know how everything goes!

Oh i am very sorry about your dog. Well you can try Heartguard to prevent young larva's from spreading, they also said ivemectrin can also kill adult heartworms. I hope he will get well soon.
