Another riddle

Okay, this one is slightly more difficult: My second is performed by my first and, it is thought, that a thief by the marks of my whole might be caught. What am I? You can probably Google this one, but where's the fun in that? Don't cheat!

I think anything that has a sequence of human action leaving traces behind can perfectly fit the above given criterion. A sequence of finger prints, foot steps, sequence of robbing actions etc. Am i right!?
