Domestically questioned

My son told me today that my stepmother showed a scratch on the back of her neck and told him not to grow up like that (i.e. do not beat up on women) and she told him to tell me what happened. I don't understand the whole predicament. She and my father married last August and I recently married last July. She and my father have been with each other on and off over the past five years. I previously heard my nephew (who lives with my dad) say something about him puttin his hands on the woman and that's why they broke up. My nephew is eleven years old and he was ten at the time this happened. I am trying to figure out why would you go back to someone who has hit you. The behavior is unfamiliar to me that my dad is said to be doing. I have never seen him hit anyone, but then again I didn't grow up with him. So, what is my responsibility in this? Why did she mention to my 7-year-old son this incident and for him to specifically let me know? I know that my son would not tell me this out of context because of the manner he delivered the message. What do I do? Do I pray? I would not know how to approach my father in this way since he has never shown any such behavior in front of me. And I am not sure if I should contact her.
