Chicken Pox

April 10, 2007 4:05am CST
Hi Everyone, I woke up the morning to discover that my two year old son has chicken pox. I was wondering if anyone out there has had to deal with this with their children and if so, how long do the spots last? I know it can't be helped but I just don't want to take too much time off work. Any help would be appreciated. Lisa

hey honey - put cotton socks (clean of course) over his hands to stop him scratching first - they really can scar! It is awful but true that calamine lotion is the best relief - it gets a bit messy but is far better than the horrible itchy feeling! Everyone varies with the spots but once they have started to scab over they aren't infectious anymore! The most important question I have is have you ever had chickenpox? If not you should take at least 10-14 days off work to ensure that you have not caught it and are out passing it around cos it is highly infectious before the spots appear! I had to take two weeks off work when my son caught chickenpox to prove I didn't have it! Hope you get through it ok - my daughter got it when she was three, got my lipstick and blobbed it all over the mirror so everyone who looked in it would think they had chickenpox too! lol xxx

Lucky for you - having had it young! the younger they get chickenpox the better - it gets worse as we get older - believe me! lol The calamine doesn't sting but if it goes on cold it could be that is why he wriggles - even then it could just be cos it is tick;y! Hope he gets better soon - I'm sure he will honey! xx

Hiya, Thankfully I had a severe case as a child and I have the scars to prove it lol Thanks for the idea of the socks, he's not itching yet but I think its early days yet. I can't believe how happy and cheerful he is, little monster lol. Does the calamine sting them do you know? as he will not sit still while i do it which makes it impossible for me to do it on my own, me n hubby have to do it as a team effort lol

hi lisa.. the incubation period of chicken pox is 10-14 days, it is highly contagious.. so if there is a pregnant woman in your area keep your son away from her because it might affect the baby that inside of her womb, im just concern.. you can used a calamine lotion to ease itching and try to visit a doctor for check up.. and if your son has a fever, change his clothes often, don't let the back of your son sweat, it might cause pneumonia.. :)

Hi, Don't worry he has seen a doctor and we are using the calamine lotion on his spots. I didn't know about the sweating so thank you for telling me that, although at the moment there is no fever. Lisa

Lisa, I sould suggest going and buying some Aveeno. It helps with the itch and relieve the itch. There isn't much that you can do about it, it just has to run its course. I would also suggest not just buying the tube of Aveeno, also get the bath stuff. It is oatmeal based. The other alternative would to be oatmeal, that is the oldest remdy for it, my parents used it when I was a child.

Been here dne that, but with us fortunately it was a mild case. I checked over at dermatology.com and this is what they have to say: "It starts off with a few red spots or bumps (often mistaken for insect bites). Fever is common. The next day many more bumps will appear, and the first bumps will have turned into blisters. On the third day, more new bumps will appear, and the second-day bumps will start to blister. On day 4 the original blisters will start to crust over. Usually by day 5, no new bumps will appear, and more blisters will crust over. By day 7, most or all of the blisters will be crusted over. The fever can last for 5 days. The total number of spots is around 200 on average." We didn't have anywhere near 200 spots, but he had been vacinated with the varicella so it reduced the severity. Good luck and may it pass swiftly!

HI!! Here in my household we are dealing with the chickenpox, my 3 year old came down with it on Sunday luckily she does not have too many spots. Now i have to wait for my year old baby to break out in spots next!! haha From what i can remember the blisters last about a week then start to scab over, i think it takes over a week or more before your baby will be allowed to go to daycare. Good luck!!
