Has your dog ever gotten skunked?

There is nothing harder to get out then the stink of a skunk after your dog has been sprayed! Heloise sent out this recipe in her newsletter recently and I had to share. Hopefully this will work!
To remove the stink:
Mix 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent (make sure it doesn't contain bleach or ammonia). Rub this mixture all over your dog's coat. Prevent it from getting into your pet's eyes or ears. Then give your pooch a bath with a mild pet shampoo. Rinse well.

Our kitties have been coming in smelling odiferous. Fortunately not badly but enough to smell them. I kind of like the smell as long as it is not overpowering. We seem to have one of those polecats hanging around. I have this recipe and it seems to take care of cat pee smells too. I guess if it works for skunk on dogs it should work well with the urine! Thanks for sharing it.

I've always thought that polecat was another name for skunk.

For the mild detergent you need one that works well on grease(like Dawn) and 1 quart of Peroxide is not enough to do a large dog....because you really have to soak the dog with the mixture.
You don't have to increase the amount of baking soda....just use several large bottles of peroxide and about 1/4 cup dish soap.I like applying it by using a sponge and once you get your dog really good and soaked.....let it set for at least 10 minutes before rinsing.Once you get all the the other stuff rinsed off....you can give the dog a bath with regular dog shampoo.
I got this recipe from a dog groomer a few years back and it really does work wonders. All the other stuff like tomato juice, lemon juice or even vinegar don't even come close.

Doesn't the peroxide dry out the dogs skin and hair? Just curious.
Thanks for the comments on how to use it right and make some adjustments! I'm keeping this one handy for sure! lol

It really doesn't hurt the skin or the hair.I know that some people think it would bleach the dogs hair.....but their hair is different then ours and it doesn't bother it.If you have a dog that already has a problem with dry skin.....just use a dog shampoo with oatmeal in it.....that helps calm the skin down and reliefs the itching caused by dry skin.

I'll have to remember that one. My current dog hasn't been but I had one years ago that got hit really bad. My sister and I were sleeping in the camper outside in our yard. The dog was outside it. Now we lived in the country and had a lot of land so she wasn't tied up. We suddenly heard her barking up a storm and then we heard the yelp. Within seconds we smelled why she yelped. We bathed her and bathed her the next day. I didn't think we'd ever get rid of that scent. It would have been nice to know about this back then.

Wow, thanks, this one is saved. I have 2 labs now, but a few years ago my dobie got skunked. We tried everything - tomato juice, lemon juice, vet shampoos everything and as soon as it rained, it started all over again.
I think it lasted about a month.

Hi! I've never had a dog or a pet "skunked," but I have been! LOL Suffice it to say that it involved duties of a former job, which included helping skunks that got their heads caught in milk cartons. And, suffice it to say that the tomato juice trick really doesn't work. Tomato juice doesn't do anything helpful for your hair, either. LOL

We were actually skunked inside my sister's truck once. The skunk ducked under the truck as we were coming by and we didn't hit it but let's just say the skunk was scared enough it hit US with something! OMG we smelled so bad, couldn't get rid of it and it literally stayed in our nostrils for a day! It was horrid! Talk about laughing later!

EWWW Yes, Once we had a German Shepherd who not only got skunked, he hated them and there were quite a number once where we lived. But he would kill and eat them. That was soooooooo gross. He didn't care, he would eat them. His poop smelled like skunk, he did and about the time it would wear off, it seemed he would kill another. This lasted for about a year and a half. Finally we could not stand it any longer nor could our neighbors. We gave him away to a family that lived way way out in the country. We were living at the time in a small community of about 300 families. I think the skunks had nests under the presbytarian church, the old post office. and old box factory building and the nearby grange hall all within about 1200 feet of where we lived.

This is about the best recipe there is. Tomato juice is a myth.
One additional tidbit that we once put to use is this. To get the smell out of a room (that perhaps your dog decided to share his newfound scent with). Set open containters (such as ice cream buckets) of apple cider vinegar in the room. Within a couple of days the majority, if not all, of the scent will be gone.

Not my dog, but I almost did!! I set a trap to catch a pesky couple of raccoons that have been terrorizing my plants and my porch for over a year. I went outside and looked and I had captured a little skunk!! I couldn't get anyone to come help me let him out, but I prayed and I finally did get the little rascal out without getting sprayed!! LOL

No, thankfully my dogs have never had a skunk - thankfully i live in a country that doesn't have skunks full stop!!!
I cant imagine the smell they make but going on a few things i've seen it's extremely EEEW!
Thanks for the tip though, i'll keep it in mind if i happen to have a USA pen pal who has this problem!
