I HATE lawyers

Ok, yesterday I started a discussion about why I hate cars, well now I am turning my fury towards lawyers. Not that I hate cars or mechanics any less today, but todays venom is reserved for lawyers, particularly family lawyers. I am separated, and in order to remortgage my house I need a document signed by my wife which states that we are separated and the house is mine and she isn't going after me for child or spousal support. Well no lawyer in my town would do the case in any sort of timely manner, so I had to go with one that works from another city. This lawyer took all the info about the agreement down via email and then proceeded to draft an agreement with conflicting info. First our childs primary residence is with me, he wrote the agreement to say that our daughter stays with my exwife..... then he wrote that the city of residence is the one he works out of not the one I live it and wrote a condition that either of us can't move our daughter out of that city........ GRRRR I hate lawyers.

You've got my sympathies there, pal. I'm still hung up waiting on my divorce to be final for similar reasons. The ex moved to another state and it's proving all but impossible to find a lawyer who can handle the divorce without charing a fortune since the rules in the two states involved are so different. Good luck to you.

Yes at least I don't have that difficulty.... what is really irritating is technically by law I don't need a separation agreement in Ontario, I only need this bloody thing so I can get my mortgage renegotiated. My wife and I were separating without an agreement since we basically agreed to all the terms up front.

Okay don't hate me Myrrdin, but as a former paralegal for over 20 years I have to side with the lawyers on this one. More than likely it is not the lawyer who made the errors, lawyers never do the work, they leave it for their paralegals or even worse their secretaries, who have limited legal experience (usually) and since you made this agreement with the lawyer over the phone, the information was obviously not taken down correctly since they had so many errors. It is best, to always visit an lawyer personally and bring any and all paperwork you can on what you need done so us (the paralegal and legal secretaries) have something to fall on when our boss' won't give us the information or can't find it or didn't write it correctly. Best thing for you to do is, calm down (first and foremost), make the corrected changes on the documents (so we have something to reference back) add any other information you want done and get it back to the lawyer's office as soon as you can. Lawyers are only good with only the best support team behind them, obviously this one is lacking in knowledge of your case, I am sure, with time, they will get better. ~ Take Care ~

Don't worry texasclassygal, I don't hate you, nor do I really and truly hate lawyers.... I am just frustrated, and the lawyer didn't take the info by phone, but by email, so the info was in black and white for the secretary or paralegal to read. I know the mistakes will be corrected quickly, but it still is irritating. MyLot makes a great place to vent though, so on I come to rant and rave until such time as I am able to write a response.... It didn't help that they sent the document in Word Perfect format and I had to get a coworker to open the document and print it for me, who uses word perfect anymore LOL...

Alot of law offices are still in the ancient ages when it comes to word processing software, probably some lawyer in the office does not want to switch over, but doesn't Word have an option that it can read Word Perfect documents?? I would send you my copy of Word Perfect if you wanted it, I don't like it and it came with my computer when I bought. By the way, thanks for the best response, I really appreciate it (¯`v´¯)-»Take Care-»(¯`v´¯)-»

I run a Mac and the Mac version of Office 2006 does not have Word Perfect compatability... but it doesn't matter now, it is a done deal, my ex signed the agreement last night.

Thanks, its nice to just vent once and a while LOL.... really I know it was probably just a silly error on their part not altering their default separation agreement properly, but it is irritating.

I guess I was extremely lucky when I went through my divorce. I had moved to the UK, got married, and then a few years later moved back to the US and began divorce proceedings. So, we weren't just in different cities or different states, but in different countries. It did take an awfully long time to actually go through, but other than that I didn't really have any huge problems with the whole procedure. Hope your situation improves soon!
