After having some things stolen from my house last week, I can't help but think if things would have been different if I'd had a dog in the yard. How many of you chose your dog with having security in mind? I think when I move into a house where pets are allowed, i definitely want a larger dog just for peace of mind.
Has anyone actually had a dog that has scared off potential robbers?

Well, I am not sure if I had potential robbers, but I can tell you that the dog I have is very intimidating. Most people are scared of him. He isn't mean or trained to attack, he is just a big dog and he barks at strangers. He is a good dog to have, and I use him for security, too. I got him because I wanted a pet. Having him as security is just a bonus. He loves us all and has become a part of the family. I wouldn't dream of leaving him outside to live in the yard. I wanted him to be a part of the family. He is allowed to roam free inside the house, and I haven't had any problems with theft while having him live indoors with me. I hate it when I see dogs living outside with no one to love him or pay any attention to him. That is so cruel. Dogs need a pack to be happy, and living with you they see you as part of their pack. Leaving them outside while you live inside makes an unhappy life for them. If you are going to have a dog live outside you should get 2 of them. They would live happier. Having them protect your home is a bonus.

I have two dogs. Well, one is mine. The other is my family's. The family dog is big, and has a very intimidating bark. However, I think if someone broke in and needed a hand, he'd help carry the tv out if he could. He's such a big pushover =)
My dog on the other hand is a whole different case. His bark isn't that intimidating. He seems more like a stalker and a surprise attacker than one for direct confrontations. I wouldn't put it past him to bite anyone who didn't belong in my house if nobody else was here.
The family dog was purely for companionship and a good pet. I absolutely got my dog for security. I lived in Flint for school, and it was not exactly the best of areas. The dog definitely intimidated potential threats to me, my house, and the rest of the people I lived with.
