An allowance is a child's share of the family income.Mum or dad, of course, provide a regular supply of pocket money, they also want to decide how much to give.Children always appreciate small gifts of money. It should be given to the youngster to do with as they please. With some children, small sums go a long way.Do your parents give you an allowance? How much?

Growing up money was extermely tight for my parents so we never got an allowance. If my parents had some extra money they would give us a dollar or two to buy what we wanted. As a parent myself I give me kids $5 each to do with want they want. If they want more money then that the have to earn it. We also give them money for bring home good grades and such.

Way back in high school, my mother gives me a weekly allowance. She said this will teach me to budget my money. I don't remember anymore how much but I can still recall that it was just enough to cover my daily expenses in school. There would be no extra money left for extra curricular activities.

I didn't get regular pocket-money until I was about 12 or 13. Until then I would get a little money or some items I wanted when I asked (provided my mother could spare the money).
From 14 I worked in the family business to earn my pocket money (£10 per week) then at 16 I got a crummy job in a hotel which earned me around £50 per week. I got almost no money from my parents from that point.
I started working full time at 18 and began paying 'board' to my mother of £100 per month. From then I received no money. The only things bought specifically for me were things I asked for when my mother shopped for groceries (particular foods / cosmetics (deodorants etc).
At 19, I left home and bought my own house. (A rarity in the UK these days!) I have received no financial help from my parents since I left home. I'm now 27. I have a friend who receives many gifts of money and lots of financial assistance from his parents, but I would rather do things the way I have. I think that my wife and I appreciate the things we have more because we've had to work hard to get them.
I have a baby daughter now, and I plan to give her a small allowance and to make her earn any extra money through household chores. Having said that, she wraps me around her little finger at 6 months, so I don't think she'll have any problems emptying my wallett in a few years!!

I do not give my daughter an allowance each week. She has chores-- She helps out- Not as much as she should probably-- but that is changing. I give my daughter money for extra things when she needs it-- Also she gets items (clothes, crafts, toys, etc.)... So she gets more than she would if she had ana allowance. She is quite spoiled to be truthful! I have thought about starting an allowance routine- Laying out the law on what she needs to accomplish each week-- and setting an allowance- but that would mean no extra stuff when she asks. I'm sure she would pick the extra stuff. :)
