Stem Cell Research - Where do You stand?

The subject of stem cell research is full of controversy. Allegations of destroying the unborn, manufacturing humans for stem cell/organs and a myriad of other things has been part of this debate. For better or for worse - here is where I stand - DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THIS GOING - NOW! Sorry I shouted. To me this issue is personal. I have had insulin dependent diabetes for over 20 years, and it got old after the first 20 minutes. Every day the stem cell research issue is delayed, legislated or what ever is another day I have to inject myself 2, 3 or more times a day with insulin. Another day I have to worry about damage to my eyes, appendages and internal organs. Without a cure, my life gets shorter, and the possibility of maintaining my current quality of life as I get older dims. Are the unborn more important than those who are already here? I hope not!

Considering how I feel about abortion, this is something that hits close to home. I've had gestational diabetes with each of my 3 pregnancies, and had to give myself insulin shots with them. I didn't mind it, because I knew that it was going to help my baby be healthy. Diabetes runs strongly in my family, and I am at high risk for contracting it later in my life once again. I understand where you're coming from with this one, and I support the research wholly. I want the UofMN to get this going, and very soon, as there are many diabetics here in the Twin City area. My mother is one of them, and she also wants this to go into effect, because she's tired of worrying about whether her feet are going to last and testing her blood sugars, and taking so many different types of medications on a daily basis. She's with the Accord Study Group, and helps to test out new meds with them. Recently, within the last year, she was diagnosed with ulcers on her feet. She's lived with holes in them due to having the ulcers cut out, and has to see the podiatrist weekly to get the old skin scraped away, so that it can heal fully. Her memory is going, and she's still having troubles maintaining a healthy blood sugar level, even with the meds. I don't want to end up like that, and I don't want my children to have to go through that either. I donated their umbilical cords when they were born, for reasons such as this. In my family we are very fertile, and I would happily give up some eggs to promote the research. I don't look at it as killing, though it's a very thin line, due to my feelings on abortion. It is a baby, yes, but at the same time, it's not somehow. I want to know that the future of my children and descendants is assured and that they won't have to worry about things like this as they get older. Times are changing, and it's well past time we get with the program here in the US.

Thank you! The mere mention of embryos or anything close is usually what gets most people's knickers in a knot. I am pro-choice. I just think that the freedom to choose in that situation is no less deserved than any other freedom we are guaranteed in this county. The outcry that unborn people would be destroys makes me question, as usual, "who" is more important - an embryo in a freezer or some one' parents, children, friends or family. I hate when that is used to beat this issue down/ Seems good ole W's only reason for hating this! I fear that someday I will be in your mother's shoes. I feel for her and hope that she can receive some healing for her ulcers. Thank you for your response!
