Schipperke!

Has anyone ever heard of the wonderful breed of dog, the Schipperke? They were used by Belgian sailors aboard their ships acting as shipguards and as ratters. Schipperkes are all black, and normally have short, stocky bodies and very bushy coats. Schipperkes are very affectionate, make good watchdogs, and tend to bond to a single owner. Our family has a 3-year-old Schipperke/Chihuahua mix named Gideon, and we love him to death! My mother bought him to be "her dog", and he has bonded to her very tightly; he can't stand it when she is gone. Have you ever had a Schipperke? Share your thoughts.

I've never owned one but with all the work I do with animals I've been around plenty! They're very energetic, bright little chappies! They can also turn into complete TERRORS if they aren't kept properly as you can see from the last reply!

Yes, "bright" is a word I would use to describe them. However, I have met a few that would better be described as "dumb as a pole". Schippers are bright dogs; they can learn a lot of tricks, if you know how to teach them.

Bah, I've never seen a "dumb" skippy! They can be hard headed sometimes though and know how to PLAY airheads at times though to get away with something! A lot of stubborn, hard headed, independant breeds are erroneously labelled dumb but I believe they're just bright enough to outsmart their owners! LOL

I used to show a Schip male named Teddy when I was in Junior Handling. He was cute as a button, used to stand on his back feet and 'wave' at you with both his front paws when he saw you coming. He was everyone's friend!

That's a Skipper for you! While I have met a few dumb skippers, I've never met an unfriendly one. They're just the friendliest dogs, and they're always willing to make a new friend. And another new friend, and another new friend, and another new friend. They're funny, they're friendly, they're silly, and I love 'em to bits.

I actually have two Schipperke's my male dog is almost 4 and my female is 3, she is a dwarf. They are a wonderful breed, very smart, but also very stubborn. All they really want is for someone to pay attention to them. They are great with children, and other pets, and they love their family. They are independent though, so be careful when you open the door because they will take off, and they are fast.
