My childs doc recommends switching to whole milk at 10 months of age, providing the child recieves most of his diet from table food at that age. Would you do it? I know generally speaking they say switch at 1. So just wondering if anyone has ever switched early, and if it's a good idea or not.

I switched at 12 months but uses Soy milk because it causes less allergies than regular milk. At 14 months I did half soy milk and half whole milk and by 18 months it was all whole milk. The soy milk was expensive but it's very good for you and my son enjoyed it even though it was not as tasty as the whole milk. You can also continue to use formula and I think they have a Toddler Formula now specifically made for older kids than eat other things.

I've never heard of a doc reccomending that, it's kind of strange, since most say not until they are one year old. I don't think it will hurt your baby to be on milk that early, as most of our generation were already on milk by that age. I think they discourage it now, because some babies have sensitive tummies, and it upset thier stomachs. My son weaned himself from nursing at nine months, and I asked the doc if I could go to whole milk instead of dishing out the $ for formula every week, and he said no. I don't know of any other reason besides it upsetting thier stomachs, it could also be that they won't be getting the calories and nutrients that they need that first year from cow's milk.

when i switched my babies in day-care over to whole milk i was mandated by the rules to wait until one year old. Then i would switch it gradually half for mula half milk, i keep going with more and more milk until totally off the formula.

His advice is based on a very broad perspective, however, each child is different and some children are not yet receiving all their nutrients yet from food and still need to be either some sort of supplement. My son was a little over a year old when I switched him over to milk and he made the transition smoothly. However, my daughter was severely allergic to fructose and lactose, so she remained on soy formula until she was two years old as her diet was very restrictive.

I personally didnt switch to whole milk with my little girl until she was 1, however she was always good whenever i changed anything in her diet and didnt really effect her.
She still has around 2 8oz bottles per day now at 16months and i dont mind giving her it as she seems to enjoy it, but she is only now starting to drink juice as she would never take it before, once she realised it wasnt milk she didnt have any of it!
The only thing that i was worried about when i changed her on to cows milk was if she put a lot of weight on with it, but i needn't have worried.
I would just use you're own instinct on this one, doctors dont normally say things if its going to be a bad thing, so i dont really think it will hurt either way what you decide to do.
No one knows you're child as well as you and whatever you decide im sure it wont be the wrong decision.
