If you could run a prison...

How would you do it? Here in Texas, the inmates have life pretty easy. They have the free room and board, three meals a day, medical and dental that they pay $3 if it's a new complaint, free if it's chronic. All medications are free, including HIV treatments, cancer therapy, and surgury. They can get more benifits than Medicare patients can. TDCJ will give dentures, as well as prosthetic eyes!! Some people even go to prison for the health care if they have a serious illness or disease that they wouldn't be able to afford out on their own. I go back and forth on this, because they can't be denied care when they can't earn a living. But some of them have big $ in their accounts, collecting social security, retirement, and disability payments so that they are very wealthy once they get out. That just doesn't seem fair! Tax-payers are supporting them DOUBLE! Some work, and others come up with any excuse to get out of working and just sleep their life away, using the system as much as they can. If I were running a prison, there would be a set rate per day that they'd have to pay for rent and food. Then they would earn $ for working, and it would go towards their bill. Those who don't want to work just pay on the debt once they get out. All the benifits should not be paid while they are locked up. Maybe disability, to cover their rent and food for the ones who COULDN'T work, but not all the others. They should also be limited by what any reasonable person could get on the outside. The glass eye would definatly be out unless they could pay for it themselves. Any other ideas?

I think you make an excellent point! It is amazing that inmates can get better care than those on the outside not being punished for wrong doing. I have heard of people that have gotten out and committed a crime just to get back in!!! That is so wrong! Although I would not want to run a prison...I would like to see the inmates have less rights.

I've seen many who are coming up for parol and do something to get set off again. It's easy living in there as long as you don't make too many enemies, and you don't mind the loss of freedom and being yelled at.

I like the idea of that sherrif in Arizona who formed 'Tent Cities'. I got an e-mail about it, so I don't have a link to post. Have you heard of it?

In my opinion the prisioners shouldnt receive a dime. They are in jail for commiting a crime lets not award them.

I think these are good ideas. We shouldn't make prisons a place they want to return to, but a place to work to get out of. It shouldn't be a sanctuary.
