For paid version, you could try Kaspersky and Symantec. These two are very effective in terms of scanning and detecting viruses and worms. For free version, you could choose AVG, AVAST, and AVIRA. Currently, I am using Avira AntiVir Personal Classic Edition. Since using this software, I have never encountered any problems at all with regards to the system performance of my machine. It updates regularly and can be scheduled at your most convenient time. It is very light on resources and does not eat a lot of memory. Hence, does not slow down your computer.
