Is it okay to put a 1-year old in front of the TV?

I sometimes put my baby in his high chair to watch cartoons while I'm doing other things. I feel guilty, though. Do you think it's okay to let him watch? If so, how long would be too long?

Thanks for the response. I bought a few Blue's Clues tapes and DVD's. My son loves them.

I wouldn't let a 1 year old spend too much time in front of the T.V.. Your child is in the process of developing habits and T.V. shouldn't be a habit but a treat that is viewed discriminately on occassions.

Right now, I let him watch a 30-minute children's show per day. He still has a very short attention span, so he probably just sees 5 minutes of it at most. I also put the TV up high so it's not at his eye level.

i guess we mothers feel guilty most of the time, i felt that also when i just left my son in his room to play for a couple of hours (but i constantly checking him) as i have some chores to finish. but thats better than him roaming around the house and hurt his self.
