Did You Ever Wonder - - -

As I was posting responses today I went to 'Today's Top Discussions'. Much to my wondering eye should appear, but one of my discussions. I was amazed. It's not like it had a bazillion responses or anything, so I wondered, "what is it that makes a discussion rate a top billing like that"? As I was reading other discussions in the todays top discussions, I couldn't determine the one factor that made the topics so 'today'. Can anyone answer this for me?

I'm afraid I don't have an answer. Sometimes it seems like ANY discussion with 6-8 or more responses can be picked to be there. I find myself wondering if these "top" discussions are picked by human beings, or if some computer algorithm just selects from discussions meeting certain criteria for newness, response rates, content, grammar, spelling, and so forth. There's much about the workings of myLot that's beyond me. On most other writing-related sites, articles make it to the front page through some system of "peer nomination." Clearly that's not the case here.

You make me laugh on this one Denmarkguy. I think it's probably computer pick - you think? I've updated my website and am starting an online writers group. Maybe you should go check it out. I'm in need of some good original articles from great writers.

Hi Terilee, I have no idea either, but one question, were all the discussions and posts written with the proper spelling, grammar and punctuation? I would think that might be a perquisite, possibly not as the guidelines do say to forgive and not comment on the posts that are poorly written with poor spelling and no grammar or spell check. I know that I have tried to brush up on mine since coming to mylot. The reason being is I want my discussions to be read, rated, as well as added to.

Hi RobinJ. I am of the opinion that spelling and grammar as well as interesting content count for a great deal. One line answers and quick responses might add money totals up but the ratings are, to me, more important than that. Having people respond because you begin interesting discussions is better than talking about Miss so and so's red panties and bra. Don't you think? I think mylot wants people to interact and respond well, with informative answers. Otherwise they wouldn't put the little text out next to the box that say, "please be as descriptive as possible." I don't think anyone likes to read things with errors or mispelled words. I know sometimes it's hard, but as a writer, that's a big no-no. Spelling and grammar count a lot. We are never too old to brush up or learn something new,now are we? Thanks RobinJ.

I think it has to do with where it comes from in your lists and then the way you tag it after you start. I'm learning where and how to catch up with my friends. If people are people, then we are bound to pose similar questions. It is up to the poser to investigate the topic before starting the discussion. I can't say they are completely real if they don't. Maybe it is an issue that should be reported, I donno.

I'm not really sure but I am guessing it may be which discussions gets the quickest replies? Like after a discussion is posted how quickly people respond? Interesting question I will be watching your discusiion to see the correct answer. ('',)
