After being shipwrecked in the middle of the ocean and waiting to be rescued....
Would you rather see land the whole time, but know it's 10 miles away OR not be able to see land but still know, somehow, that is is 5 miles away?
I guess this is a matter of personal perception.
See land but 10 miles away...Not see land but know it is 5 miles away?

Hmmm...that it a hard one.
If I was ever to become shipwrecked, it would be very frustrating to see the land and know that it is only 10 miles away.
But, there is no way I would ever go out there unless I made something. Even then I might be worried.
If I could see the land, it would be like someone torturing a diabetic with chocolate cake and ice cream. They know that it is right there, and they can see it but they cannot have it.
On the other hand, not being able to see it might give me no hope at all. But, if I did know that is was only 5 miles away....I would have to choose that.
So, my final answer is......I would rather not be able to see land the whole time, and somehow, know that is only 5 miles away. :)
Which would you rather?

I would much rather be the tortured diabetic. ha ha I am pretty used to that by now. ha ha With all the birthdays in this house! LOL And another one next week!
But if I didn't see land and just knew it was 5 miles away...what if I swam the wrong way? At least if I saw the land, I might feel that I am making progress. :)
Thanks for asking which one I would rather. :D

I'd rather see it. In the middle of the ocean it's easy to get turned around and disoriented. If you can't see the point you're headed toward, you could easily wind up swimming in the wrong direction. I'd rather have to swim 5 extra miles but know that I'm headed the right direction than end up swimming 5 miles the wrong way.

:) Awesome! Glad that I am not the only one that thinks that way.

LOL This is an easy one for me. I am afraid of water so I would not be on a ship to start with. LOL
If I had to be there though, I would rather see land. I think that may keep me from drowning myself. I know I would have an anxiety attack and die of fright. LOL

Hey, I am right there with you!!! You might have to try to give me CPR in the water if you don't want to be alone! Cause to get me on a boat is one thing that I wouldn't do...and if it sank!!! Oh my! I would have a heart attack!!! LOL

I would rather be able to SEE land... even if it is further away. For me, it has to do with having something to focus on-- having some point of certainty in the middle of an awful situation. Even if I KNEW land was five miles away, I still think my brain would start playing tricks with me... and I'd start playing the "what if" game. What IF I'm really wrong, and land is 500 miles away? And so on...
I guess it's really a question of "belief" vs. "knowing."

That is awesome! I know exactly what you mean.
I am a person that is always thinking, What IF! LOL
So, I could not agree with you more...I would want to see the land too.
Because What If I was swimming the wrong way???

I would rather be five miles off shore than ten, whether I could see it or not. I think it would increase he chance of getting rescued. We ran out of gas years ago off Santa Barbara and it was on a day were there was a small craft advisory out. As we sat there, stalled and drifting further out towards the channel islands (at first the harbor was close, but in the end it was just a speck), the only thing I wanted to see was someone coming to give us a tow in!

Oh my goodness!!!! I would have had a heart attack!!!!!
Glad to know you made it back safely!
How long did you drift before getting a tow back?

i would rather see it and it be 10 miles away because then at least you know what directio to head in and it would just reassure you, but if you were shipwrecked and it meant your life, swimming an extra 5 miles won't bother me considering what you get in return, life.

I would have to say I'd want to see it... it would give me hope and motivation for reaching it. Plus, knowing land is 5 miles away doesn't mean you know in which direction, right? So you could spend a lot more time looking for it and end up traveling more than 5 miles by going in the wrong direction.
I'm responding from my notification email, so I can't see the other responses (yet)... hope I don't end up accidently copying ((myLot needs to change this back so we can decide if we should comment or respond!))

I would rather see the land the whole time as I would want to know that it is out there. It would be worth it to swim that long distance knowing that it is there for sure. I would not want to be 5 miles away and not knowing for sure if land is out there. Being able to see the land would make me feel a little more comfortable than not seeing land.

I think the frustration I'd feel in seeing the land but it being ten miles away, so near yet so far would be far worst than not being able to see the land. You are right it is a matter of personal perception. It's like seeing the carrot at the end of the string but knowing you'll never get that carrot. Frustration would eat me up so definitely the latter

Good comparison. :)
It would be like a carrot and a stick. LOL
Hence, my question because I like reading about the differences of the perceptions.

I would rather not see it, and know it is only five miles away. Eventally, hope it showed so I could swim to it. 10 miles is too far, and it's like dangling your favorite sweet in front of you, and you cannot have it.

Well humm...
I think I would rather be able to see the land. It would be a symbol of hope for me I think.
Either way it would be a bit comforting to know that it was so close though because there is a very good chance that someone from the land very well could come on over at any moment. Plus if I could see the land then they in turn could see the island I was deserted on. Therefore that could make the chance even bigger.

I'll pick the 3rd one haha, okay i know there wasn't a third one, but I'm inventing it!!!
Stay where you are until you get saved!
I don't swim
I don't like the idea of sharks
I don't like cold water
And there's no way I'm even going to try, I'd rather die where i am than have the thought of the fishes eating me alive! And the water giving me hypothermia, and yeah then there's the delusions!!!!
Scary, yes i agree, totally.
Nope not gonna happen, damn, maybe i just won't go to the ocean, that way it doesn't happen to me hahaha.

I think I would rather see it. Then I would know which way to go. But after I went 5 miles - I would rather it only be 5 miles away. But I still I would have to go for what I could see!!!!

I would rather see an island 10 miles away. because if I couldn't see it than I would be really scared and nervous. And the whole time you are swimming to get to the island, you might get there faster than you thought because you were happy you could see land and knew you;d be safe soon.

I think I'd rather know that land is only 5 miles away. I think we'd have more of a chance of either making it to shore or having someone rescue us that close to shore, then be able to just see it and yet be still 10 miles away.

I believe that i would chose to see the land because then i would notice if somebody was out there and MABY i might be able to signal them!
