E-Paper is a display technology disigned to momic the appearance of regular ink on paper. Unlike a conventional flat panel display, which uses a backlight to illuminate its pixels, electronic paper refelects light like ordinary paper and is capable of holding text and images indefinitely without drawing electricity, while allowing the image to be changed later. One important feature needed is that the pixels be image stable, or bistable, so that the state of each pixel can be maintained without a constant supply of power. Electronic paper was first developed in the 1970s by Xerox.

Electronic paper, or e-paper, is a technology that allows the text on a piece of paper to be re-written. The "paper" is actually made of organic electronics that use conductive plastic which contains tiny balls that respond to an electric charge, changing the page in much the same way that pixels change on a computer monitor.

What is most interesting is the way they will use a small flake of metal inside of each tiny plastic bubbles which either on, say negative charge, will fall to the side of the bubble where it cannot be seen (hence showing the unerneath side, which is white), and then on the positive charge will move back into the center of the bubble preventing the white from being shown. I would love to see this technology combined with the smart cards (credit card like cards w/ a microprocessor built in and a RFID transponder for communication).
