Do you and your family have similar occupations?

I was just thinking about this. I know there are families where members go into the medical profession etc. But that's not the case in my family. My dad's a civil engineer, my mum's a midwife, my oldest sister is in marketing, I'll be going into accounting/finance sector, another sister is doing biomed science, and my youngest sister wants to work with children. Have your family ended up in similar professions or have you all gone different ways?

We sort of started out in the same profession. I worked at the car dealership as a secretary when he was hired as a mechanic. However, he is still a mechanic at that dealership and I went on to work another office job before opening my own daycare business. Because we have children of our own to raise as well, you could say we are still in a similar business, he just works a day job too.

That's not the case in my family either. My grandma was in retail, my grandpa worked in a factory, my dad is a truck driver, my mom is a substitute teacher and helps out a lady with her house and I'm a waitress. I haven't quite picked a profession but I am pretty sure I want it to be in the restaurant business since I've been a waitress/hostess for 3 years.

It seems as though the majority of my family have gone into the medical field. My brother is a psychiatrist but most of the rest of us who have formed careers, myself included, are nurses. I wonder if it is something in our nature or coincidence, or nurture. Hmmmm?

Maybe the medical world is just in your genes! I myself never felt drawn to nursing, and I couldn't imaging being a civil engineer, I used to help my dad with some stuff and it just didn't appeal to me in the slightest.

I'd say half and half; my dad is a construction worker, a brick layer to be more precise. My brother is starting his own brick laying company this year, and my hubby has worked for about 2 yrs with my dad and brother. Us women had nothing to do with this construction field of work. I've been in retail, like, forever, my mom is a housewife, my sister in law is in offices, my little sister is also in retail, but i don't think she'll work that field forever like me LOL. Now my hubby is in the automotive industry, along with his brother.

Not in my immediate family. I was in banking and am now a SAHM. My mom did computer work and lots of schooling, and my dad is a retired math professor. In DH's family though, there are 3 city workers, 2 installers, 3 school custodians and a school bus driver.

My observations tell me that families in the fields of medicine, law and education tend to have similar occupations, from the parents to the children, some even grandparents. Perhaps it is the genes in the family or the expectation that comes from such professions. I do not belong to the above 3 fields, and I can safely say all my family members are in different occupations except my brother and his wife who are both teachers. My nephew has ambition to be a teacher too. lol.

No one in my family has the same profession. But a family I know (a mother and all 5 of her children) are in the education field. I have always wondered about families in which everyone seems to be in the same profession. Is it just in their DNA, or do you think the children follow in their parents footsteps to please them? Or could it just be they see how much their parents loved their jobs and want the same for themselves.

I think sometimes it just becomes the family norm for members to follow in their parent's footsteps, but I think that there's also that element that the family members just have a natural leaning towards that area. And they would already know a lot about the profession from their parents before knowing whether it's for them or not.

Everyone in my family pretty much have gone in different directions when it comes to careers. My dad is a security guard now but he was a maintenance technician for 30 years, my mother is a housekeeper in a old folks home, my brother is a waiter and I'm a freelance writer. Although my brother and I both share an interest in writing and he's working on his first novel for publication. I think it just depends on the family, on my mother's side most of the men except for her father and uncle were lawyers. I think sometimes there are just traditions of particular careers in families and so every generation has one or more who follow in those footsteps.

I agree, I think sometimes it just becomes expected.

My mom is a real estate broker. I am a licensed real estate agent and a closing coordinator. One brother works at a bar at night and spa during the day. My other brother does back ground checks at the corporate office of a large tire company. My stepdad is retired but was a factory manager and union rep.

my dad used to be a sales rep for a company but when he retired he entered into business. the same thing with my mom, she helps my dad in his business. after graduating in college, i thought that i don't want to work with a boss so i decided to venture into business. the same thing happened to my 2 brothers. but my sister and another brother wanted to apply their course in college. my sister is a medical technologist while my brother is an architect. i guess the profession in the family is affected more by the environment.
