Administrative Assistant! What?!

At the company I work for, certain departments have their own administrative assistants. I am in the sales dept. and we have one. She is the dumbest person (aside from my sister-in-law) that I have ever met. She can't figure out the phone system, she spends most of her time on personal phone calls and not answering the phone, she doesn't know how to work her computer very well, mostly she is on yahoo chatting away. What is up with this? It gets so bad sometimes that even her boss (who is not the one who hired her, he just recently took over) will come to me and ask me to do certain administrative assistant duties. Of course, I know why he is asking me, and sometimes some of the other girls here. And I gladly do it, correctly, with a smile on my face. I don't mind doing things for him, but the point is, that's not my job. That is what she is getting paid for. I don't understand how she is keeping her job. The worst part is, she just got a raise before the new guy took over. The old boss I think felt bad for her or just never realized that she can't handle her job. It is so frustrating sometimes.

Situations like this used to annoy me and then I realized I was spending way too much time worrying about ignorant people. So, now I try to keep it in perspective and hold onto the idea that eventually, they will get caught up with. I usually will go above and beyond if someone asks nicely, but I also find by doing it, many will assist me as well. Great topic and I can sympathize with you !

Maybe she was assisting the old boss in other ways... ;o)
It is frustrating having to work along someone like this. My sister was in the same situation until a downsizing came along. No, no. They didn't get rid of the deadhead. They got rid of my sister, who did EVERYTHING there! Luckily, another division of the company sat up and begged for her. Now, she says, she feels she is working with adults. Maybe the new boss will change things. Good luck!

Yeah, I could totally see that happening around here. The competant one gets fired and the lazy one stays. I just ignore her most of the time but other times it's hard not to.
