I need to go on a diet

April 13, 2007 4:27am CST
Overall I want to lose 3 stone in the next year. Any suggestions of a diet that really works? I've tried a low calorie diet but got fed up of counting calories.

I don't like to recommend one thing over another because, as we all know, what works for me might not work for you... but, since you asked :) I'm currently following the South Beach Diet and have lost 15 pounds to date. I like the fact that it comes off slowly (making me see that I CAN lose and I CAN keep it off). There's no counting to do. Just lists of food to enjoy and foods to avoid, depending on which phase of the plan you are on. Phase I is intended to be 2 weeks and a lot of people find it hard (I didn't and I'm actually extending it by a bit, since the plan allows for that). You don't eat any bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit, etc., for those first two weeks. Mostly lean meat, any fish and seafood you like, eggs (that's breakfast every day), low-fat cheese, nuts, and veggies. I missed the fruit and pasta most of all but then the strangest thing happened. I "thought" I missed things like french fries and, then, when my husband had some, I decided to treat myself to a few. I ate them and felt lousy after -- I just really didn't enjoy them. So I guess that's good :) Anyway, South Beach focuses on blood sugar and how your body processes the food you eat. Things I used to think were good choices for me just aren't. I also learned about the differences in certain fruits (used to think watermelon was a great choice, weight-wise, but it's sure NOT blood sugar-wise). Anyway, I'm going to keep at this and see where it takes me. I'd like more than anything to get off my blood pressure meds and I've come to believe that weight loss will be the only way. My doctor is great at prescribing BP pills but wasn't great at helping me with my weight. Her best advice was "don't eat" -- she feels that adults just simply eat much more food than we need to exist. An associate of my firmly believes in the South Beach Diet and she actually bought me the book and had it shipped to me. I'm really glad she did. Good luck with your goals! :)

To be completely honest i tried everything, slimming pills, atkins diet, not eating for as long as i could then eating everything in sight! In the end, after i'd had a baby i need to lose about 5 stone, i had a caesarian (or c-section) and it made me lose my appetite for 2 or 3 weeks after it, maybe just because i was in that much pain i couldnt do anything. I lost a stone pretty quick so i think seeing some kind of results made me even more determined. So i went a on a diet eating between 1200 and 1500 cals a day, i know you said you got sick of counting calories but i have had a weight problem all my life, and this is the only thing that worked for me. After a while i stopped counting them as a lot of it was common sense, it can be quite obvious what can be high and what isnt. Maybe if you just start by cutting out the bad stuff that you know is nice and think to yourself - just a little wont harm, well it does. From then you could start adapting other ways you eat. In general if you try and get as many of you're recomended 5 fruit or veg a day intake and eat 3 meals where you can, you're on the right road! Good luck, i know it is a battle to lose weight, finally after 9months i got where i wanted to be and now weigh about 130lbs. Happy dieting :) x

In the very simplest terms all you need to do is eat a tiny bit less and also excercise a tiny bit more, and keep it up. However, I knwo how hars it is to balance than and what worked for me was using an online food diary at weightlossresources, it made it really easy to see what was good and what was sending it all awry.

how much is 3 stone in pounds or kilos? i know how you feel. ive been trying to diet like forever but it seems like it's just so hard to lose the excess pounds. one thing that works for me though is the 'After 6' rule. it means that after 6 pm, you don't have to eat anything. or if this is too hard for you, just try not to eat 2 hours before sleeping time. good luck!

I need to lose about 10 pounds myself. My problem is will power, I have none. I have tried every diet pill known to man. My new plan is portion control and exercise. I figure that if I just get moving, I have to lose weight. I did a food tracker and it said I wasn't eating enough. OK, so why can't I lose weight then? So I am trying to eat more but healthier foods.

Eat less than before and keep doing exercise. It is the essential step to lost weight.Or you can eat fruits instead of meat .

Hi, Have you considered trying the PATHS method? There is a module for losing weight and there is another module for gaining muscle mass with very little effort. Honestly, I love them both! http://www.therightpaths.com
