i have both laptop as well as desktop PC at my home. Both have a Plus point as well as minus point. Plus point about laptop is that it is portable,when connected with internet u can feel the immense power of the laptop.It is also energy efficient,doesn't harm our eyes,light weight,wide screens.. negative point about the laptop is that, it cannot be upgraded (putting additional Rams, hard disk,etc.). i sometimes get frightened to open my laptop or clean the batterry n all. Pluspoint about the desktop PC is that it is easily upgradable. Minuspoint is that it is static, non portable.

I prefer laptops because I am a college student and it's really useful. I can take it all over campus and do my work there... not just in my dorm. (that gets old fast) You can also take it to class for notes.

I would say that a desktop is better because you can always update it whenever you want to install new hardware it is much easier then a laptop. But a laptop is much better for going places and travelling especially if you are a travelling business man.
