How hard is it for the average person to break into the music biz?

My partner is a singer/songwriter and guitarist. He has been for years now and has both played in and formed his own bands. Getting into the music business is very difficult, and takes a great deal of hard work and effort, combined with a load of talent and dedication. He gets very despondent at times when he feels that he will never get any further but I don't want him to quit trying

How to you as his partner manage to stay focussed and be supportive? Do you have a family to support? Who's the breadwinner?
I would love for my husband to pursue his music again (he was offered a music deal only to have it taken away when he refused to sleep with someone), but we also have a family to support and he wants me to stay home with the kids, so it's a tough situation.
How do u do it?

My partner works full time and can only devote time to music in the evenings and at weekends. It is very hard on us sometimes as he is so talented but we can't get anyone to listen. We keep trying though.
thanks for the best response

I have no experience of the music industry but i would imagine its one of the hardest industries to break into and be successful in. There are so many bands and solo artists and new ones are appearing on a fast scale.
Lilly Allen was first noticed on Myspace after many people said she was a good singer and she has continued to be popular with many people, although im not one of them. So it can be done but i would say one out of a hundred or may succeed.
