Jon Corzine was critically injured last night when an erratic driver forced his vehicle off the road. Corzine was not driving, but was sitting in the front seat--but NOT wearing a seat belt! He has six broken ribs on both sides, a broken sternum, broken collarbone, a broken vertebrae, and a compound fracture of the femur (upper leg bone)--bone sticking through the skin. He is on a ventilator and in critical but stable condition. Sounds like he's lucky to be alive. He needed 7 pints of blood last night, has had several operations, and will need several more. I always wear a selt belt when I'm in a car. How about you?

I always wear a seat belt also, however I think it's crazy that people are forced to wear them by law. It someone for whatever reason doesn't want to wear one, they shouldn't have to. It's their life.

It is their life, except that hospitals (and eventually taxpayers) end up paying the medical expenses for patching up people injured in car accidents, especially if they don't have insurance. I think NJ has a seatbelt law... wonder if the governor will get a ticket? ;-)

I wonder if he got a ticket too. The taxes comment is a cop-out in my opinion. You can have insurance and be refused healthcare by your health insurance company, just like you can be in an accident and have the car insurance companies refuse to pay for treatment. Sadly it happens all the time. The healthcare system in our country is broken.

Better to wear a seat belt in the first place, and not end up with so many injuries. I agree the health care system is messed up, though.

I rarely wear my belt anymore. I used to wear it all the time but since my surgery I have 2 scars across my throat that when I wear the belt it rubs on them. It drives me crazy. I know it's because I'm "short" and the belt technically doesn't fit me well but even the adjustable belts that you can lower on the side seem to rub on that area. It's not that I don't think they do good, they can definitely help but I also have seen some horrible injuries caused BY the belts too. So I think it's simply a matter of the lesser of 2 evils perhaps.

I've never been in a serious accident, but I put the belt on every time I'm in a car. One of the accidents that I was in was 10 blocks from my apt. and I was going slower than 20 mph, but still could have been injured if circumstances had been different.

I live in New Jersey and you are required by law to wear a seat belt. I believe the fine for not wearing one is around 50 dollars. They even have days when they pull over cars and check to see if people are wearing their seatbelts. I think Governor Corzine must really be stupid for not wearing his seat belt. It only takes a second to put it on and it's proven that it saves lives and prevent certain injuries. This just proves that wealth and fame doesn't equate with common sense. Lloyd

I always put my seatbelt on. This was drummed into me by my son years ago. If the car moved without seatbelts on he got all over me and a lecture was forth coming. So it was just easier to put it on. Now many years down the road it is a habit and automatically when I get in the car the first thing I do is put on my seatbelt. I do tip my hat to my son. It was a good thing he kept on me about it because now it is a habit that is deeply imbeded in me. I think that the governor should get a very hefty fine. This is being drummed in us over and over again. About our seatbelts being fastened. There is a fine for not doing this. The governor like it or not is our example. He should be fined heavily.

I hope people will learn from this example. The other two people in the governor's vehicle were barely injured at all because they were wearing their seatbelts.
