How much weight did you gain when you were pregnant?

My pregnant belly - This picture was taken just two weeks before I gave birth to Brooklyn. I got even bigger than this in the following two weeks. I gained 20-25 lbs.

I was recently talking to soem of my friends about how much weight we gained when we were pregnant. I was 110 when I got pregnant and although I didn't get weighed the week of, I think I gained 20-25 pounds. I have a really hard time gaining weight, always have, and the only reason I think I gained this much is because I was off work on couch rest (not fun!) for two months! My daughter was only 6 lbs 8 ounces at three weeks early, but the doctor said that she was perfect! Anyway, I think its funny because some of my friends gained 30-40 lbs and had 7 lb babies, how does that happen? Also two girls were my size,a bout 115 and gained 60-80 lbs, I mean they went up to almost 200lbs! That is unfathomable to me. Their babies were 9 lbs or so. And then they lost almost all of that baby weight. Isn't that dangerous on them and the baby? How much did you gain and how much did your babies weigh when they were born? Home much you think people should put on for a safe and healthy pregnancy?

I gained 45 lbs with both of my sons, and they were both 9lb babys. I quickly lost all my weight though. I do not think I was unhealthy, I ate very healthy during my pregnancy and I walked regularly.

That is the key, I also ate very healthy. I had a Canad's food guide serving counter stuck on my fridge and I followed it everyday. It was much easier to keep track of on it because of the sliding bar instead of just adding in my head!

I think what you said there is really the key. If you eat healthy and get regular excercise (if you are permitted to) like walking than whatever you gain is what your body needs to make a healthy baby. Our bodies are made to make babies and they know what is necessary.

I only gained 30 pounds with the twins. My weight went to 190 pounds. Since they were fraternal (in different sacs with their own amniotic fluid) this was not very much...but I think that i was actually taking off a little fat while the little ones were growing. When they were born, the little boy weiged 6lb 3 oz and the little girl 5lb 11 oz...I looked huge!!! After my 4 week checkup I weighed 40 pounds less. So, in essense, I lost 10 pounds!

Those are good weights for twins, my cousin had a 4 pound boy and a 3.7 pound girl and she gained a lot more than you did. It's great you lost extra!

I gained 65 pounds and my son was only 7 pounds. But I was really underweight before I got pregnant, like my ribs were sticking out so I need to put some weight on anyways. I've lost almost all of it, but now I have a little meat on my bones, which my hubby loves. I also had a lot of water weight, I was on bedrest with my legs elevated, I was miserable. I think what happened to me was safe and completely normal. I did lose the weight overtime, not drastically. Most of it came off when my son began to walk and run, had to chase him!

That sounds like me before I got pregnant! I hope I gain more next time, but I think for a smaller person, 7 lbs is good enough, I can't imagine at my size having a 9 or 10 pound baby.

I'm due any day now (due date is 4/14) I've gained 21 lbs. I worked really hard not to gain more than around that as I was already overweight when I first became pregnant.

With my first child, I gained 17 pounds and she was 5 pounds, 15.5 ounces. With my second child, I LOST 6 pounds and she was 6 pounds, 9 ounces. And finally, with my last child, I gained 22 pounds and he was 6 pounds 14 ounces. The kids kept getting slightly bigger, no matter how much weight I gained (or lost), so quitting at three was probably a good idea! Most doctors recommend 25-35 pounds, depending on the initial build and weight of the mother to begin with.

That's what I figured the weight range might be, I think I did pretty good to gain 20 then. My friend is thinking about trying again and said she had a 8 pound girl last time and can't imagine how big the next one will be since they usually do increase in size.

What is pre-eclampsia? Will you always have it when you get pregnant? And by the way 30 lbs in two weeks is an amazing loss. Its only been 3 months though, don't give up! I still have a little belly on me too!

I gained 60lbs the first time and my boy was 7lbs 6oz (started at 125lbs and 5'10), next time i started at 120lbs and gained 15lbs because i was ill and that son was 7lbs 14oz. The third time I started at 115lbs and gained 65 and that boy was 8lbs 10oz. Fourth time I started at 135 and gained about 60 and he weighed 8lbs 2oz. This time was only a short time after I gave birth, so I started heavier, about 145, and already gained about 30lbs. Right on target for my usualy 60lb weight gain. Not looking forward ot it!

My first pregnancy (a boy) I gained almost 50lbs. My second (a girl) I gained about 19 lbs. My son weighed 8lbs 9 oz when he was born and my daughter weighed 7lbs 15 oz. They were both a few days past the due date. I was overweight to start with. I don't know what healthy is necessarily, but it all worked for me. I have lost all of my baby weight. Its not too hard with little ones to run after all day :).

OK..so I read my post and I want to say that I don't mean to offend anyone. It could be very difficult to lose the baby weight. I should have said that it wasn't too hard for ME. I am still overweight though and I can't seem to get that to budge :)

My mom said she gained more with my brother than when she was pregnant with me. I wonder why that is, it seems pretty common. That's very true that it will be easier to lose weight the next time when I have spunky little Brooke running around. I can already tell that she will be a handful!

I gained almost 50 pounds but my son was 10 lbs 1oz and 21.5" long so he was a biggun. I don't thinl my weight was that much considering the big baby I was feeding but I wish I would have gained less and had a smaller baby because I did get some ugly stretchmarks and my skin stretched a whole lot since I was very skinny when I got pregnant.

Before I got pregnant, I was reallllly skinny, I was 5'6" and ~123 pounds. The day I had my daughter, I was 167, which is a 45 pound gain! I was told by everyone that it was all belly.. and most of it was. My daughter was 6 pounds 6 ounces and I was induced 5 days early (due to medical concerns with my baby but thats a whole different story.) I lost about 10 pounds having her.. all the fluids and baby etc and lost 17 pounds on my own. Its been 11 months and now I am done to about 140 +/- but I still have another 15 pounds to lose to get down to what I was before the pregnancy. However, I dont know if I'll ever be that small again because I was underweight previously. To answer your question, the amount of weight that a woman should gain depends mostly on her body condition previous to the pregnancy. For example, my doctor told me to gain between 30-50 pounds for the pregnancy but I've read that overweight women shouldn't gain that much. I dont know if its true or not, but Ive heard that women gain most with their first child.

The standard weight gain I've always been told is 25 pounds for overweight moms, 30 for average weight moms and 35 for underweight moms. I gained between 30 pounds and 45 pounds with mine. All were healthy and there didn't deem to be any correlation between my weight gain and the baby's birth weight. DD#1 6lbs 6 oz...30 1/4 pounds-3 days overdue DS#1 7lbs 5oz...38 pounds-5 days overdue DD#2 6lbs 8oz...42 pounds-6 days early DS#2 8lbs 4oz...33pounds-1 day early DS#3 8lbs 8oz...31 pounds-10 days overdue DS#4 7lbs 5oz...45 pounds-2 weeks early My starting weight with all of them was between 103 to 108 which by my doctors standard is slightly underweight for my height of 5'3". She thinks I should be 115-120. I try but gaining weight isn't easy for me either. I think as long as a mom is eating healthy foods and only eating when she is hungry the exact number on the scale should matter much. Women gain weight differently and babies can vary quite a bit in size.

I recently gave birth to an 8 lb. 10 oz. baby girl (my first baby) and put on an astronishing 55 lbs. during this pregnancy. After reading all the baby books and talking to my OB-GYN, I was expecting to gain between 25-35 lbs., NOT 55, but I had a normal, healthy pregnancy. I ate fairy healthy but regret not following an excercise regimen throughout. Before my pregnancy I was a petite size 4/6, now I am a 10/12 and absolutely MISERABLE! I hate my postpartum body and having nothing to wear all the time. I'm starting to drop some of the extra weight and can't wait until I get my old wardrobe back!

Wow that is a large baby for your first! She is beautiful by the way. Excerise should be part of a healthy pregnantcy but sometimes you just don't feel like doing anything, especially when you get so big it is annoying and uncomfortable to walk! I also went up two sizes and I even lost most of my weight! I think it's worth it in one aspect but when yuo look through you closet and see all the cute things you used to be able to fit into, it is upsetting. Kepp at it, I try walking with the baby everyday that it's nice enough. Good luck!

Don't hate me, but I actually LOST weight! It was a healthy weight loss--with my doctor's OK, so don't worry about the health of the baby. I am way overweight to begin with, so when I became pregnant, I started eating healthier and taking better care of myself. I didn't hinder the baby's growth or development, just reduced mine. :)For each pregnancy I was 30-35 lighter than before I started. DH & I tease that I should be pregnant until I become my ideal weight. LOL!!!

My Tummy - My big tummy taken last week.. stretch marks and all..
I gained around 35 to 40 pounds for both my eldest child and with my youngest who I am carrying with me right now.. I am due to give birth 3 weeks from now.. My eldest was 8.2 pounds when she came out.. Perhaps my son would be approximately the same..

I don't remember how much I gained when I was expecting my daughter, but it was everywhere but in my stomach. Later on when she was born we found out that she had a severe congenital heart defect and that was why she didn't grow like she should have when I was carrying her. When I was pregnant with my son I can't remember how much I gained either, but I think it had to be 20 pounds or more. I felt like I was carrying a big basketball around in front of me all the time.:) He weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces when he was born and my daughter only weighed 5 pounds, 1 ounce.
